A pretty impressive list compiled by The Detroit Free Press, even though it's a bit to heavy on Motown for my taste:

There's so many others that could have been on it.

Why would you be surprised that a lot of Motown would be found in Detroit?

It's not an objective list of the best music. It's a list of top 100 songs from people in Detroit. That would be like getting annoyed that a top 100 list from New Orleans emphasizes jazz.

What's the difference between the "top" songs by people from Detroit and the "best" songs by people from Detroit?

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

I'd like to know what he means to, because he's reading way more into my comment than I intended.

By the way Ed, that's some great music on any list.

My point is that no list is objective. (I'm sorry btw if I used "best" instead of "top.") Any "top 100" list from a specific area is going to reflect the tastes of that area and, if you are not from that area, there's a good chance that songs YOU think are deserving (songs in fact that may well BE deserving) aren't going to show up. Saying you're surprised that Motown was heavily favored in the city where Motown originated is kind of silly.

It's all a matter of proportion...there's a ton of non-Motown rock that came from Detroit, too.

Yeah, some omissions are a bit surprising. Example, not one Madonna song made the top 100.

Despite being a Detroiter, I did not take part in this poll.

Those of us that are native Detroiters better understand the many artists and songs that could have been on the list.
