Anyone noticing that David Ortiz is on his way to having the best farewell season in history for a player age 40 or more? To put it into context with another Red Sox great, Ted Williams is considered to have one of the best such seasons - a top-5 40+ farewell. Here are some of Williams's highlights:

BA .316. 15 doubles, 29 HR, .451 OBP, .645 slugging percentage. 98 hits. 113 games played.

Here's Ortiz:

.BA .330 (his best since 2007), 34 doubles, 24 HR, .423 OBP, .673 slugging percentage (career high from a guy with 527 homers). 104 hits. 87 games played. And it's still JULY. He's well on pace to hit at least 40 home runs and 40 doubles, a feat that's only been accomplished by a couple of dozen players, and if he does so, he'll become the third person to do it 3 times, and I assume the oldest to ever do it (only Albert Pujols and Lou Genrig have done it 3 times).

The Red Sox aren't my team, but this is pretty darn historic.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

One of the things I love about baseball - and I'm not being facetious here - is the way that the statistics are sliced and diced.

If you want to know which player who was between 26 years old and 37 years old, batted left-handed, with vision worse than 20-100 in his right eye, hit the most doubles to left-center field in games starting after 4:30 Eastern time, somebody will have compiled the list.

It's awesome!

(And, as I said, I'm not being facetious.)

It does help fill the hall of fame.

Thanks for pointing it out. We'll have fun watching Ortiz and he rest of the season.

One thing that makes baseball beautiful is that extraordinary achievements are appreciated throughout the community, and not just by the fans of the player or his team. And statistics play a large part of that, because we're much more aware of how astounding some achievements are. Having a career-high slugging percentage over the age of 40 is astonishing. If he gets the 40/40 Lobo projects, everybody in baseball will tip their hats and express admiration.

I'm taking my wife on a rather spontaneously planned trip to the States. I'm going to visit my terminally ill sister in southern Alabama, but I'm flying to Atlanta, where I'll catch some baseball. Unfortunately, the Braves are playing the Phillies--who have never warmed my heart, in spite of Jeff Stone having played with them. Still, I'm going. I also might convince the wife to see some minor league ball. Mobile and Pensacola have teams. It'll be a nice trip.

Very sorry to hear about your sister, Stone. Hope you guys have a great trip.

Ortiz went 3 for 3 yesterday and drew a walk, scored two runs, and had two RBI. He also hit his 30th double, tying Sam Rice's 86 year old record for most doubles by a 40+ year old.

In other news, Mike Trout continues to be the closest thing to Mickey Mantle we've seen in quite a while.

And in still yet OTHER news, a weird pair gets inducted into the Hall of Fame - the only two players inducted this year are the all-time highest draft pick ever to make the Hall of Fame (Griffey, the only #1 overall pick to make the Hall...and the all-time LOWEST draft pick, Mike Piazza, who had the most home runs of any catcher ever, but was not one of the first 1,000 players selected when he was drafted! Great pair of players, with over 1,000 home runs between them.

By the way, of course, the three writers who didn't vote for Griffey for the Hall of Fame should have their voting privileges revoked, and should be publicly flogged.
