Hi all,
I live a little over an hour from savannah and am thinking of going there this weekend and performing on River Street. I have checked with the Savannah website and they say you need a permit, but I want to know how many actually get permits for there. I know kasper777 has busked there some and I would love some advice from someone with experience there. If the permit is strictly enforced than it could be a few weeks before I could get one-the site said at least 5 business days.

I would also bring a small portable sound system, which I read was common in a previous post about savannah. Anyway, the crowds should be good as its a tourist spot and I am hoping to gain lots of valuable experience (and some money).

My parents went to Savannah this past year and I think they saw the end of Gazzo's performance on River Street. My dad said there was a magician that had at least 200-300 people watching him and giving him tips, but he was too far back and got there to late to see the majority of the show.

Anyway, anyone with experience down in savannah please feel free to chime in with some pointers.

Thanks in advance,
Chad

I have not said this, nor am I advocating anyone follow the old adage
"It is easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission."

But I do not advocate willfully violating the law. The only time I tried and found out I needed a "busker's license" the officer (a really nice guy) told me to "just pack up and get your A^% out of here." Someone else could have taken me to jail.

Aaaaahhhhh. I miss that pitch. Savannah is a great pitch to get started in busking. At the time, I lived in Beaufort, SC and drove to Savannah. There's a good bunch of magician on Hilton Head, SC, if you're interested in S.A.M. Here is the low-down on Sav. River St. is a big pitch, if you don't have a big set or if you can't handle a crowd like Gazzo, go to City Market. It took Gazzo 45mins just to get a decent edge for him to start working. The people in City Market are closer to you and easier to pull them in, then instead of them being across the street like on River St.

In City Market go over to the side by the horses, not near the band. There's an art gallery and a coffee shop over there. I set up inbetween two plants and faced towards the center. And on those really hot days, I backed up under an over hang so my audience had shade, and they would stay longer.

Once you are comfortable there, then walk on down to River St. The best place to set up (this might be hard to explain) is right in front of the steps with hand rails to either side of the main pavillion. I've always fancied the first one (there's 4 there if you know what I'm talking about)

As far as permits, I got checked on River St. just about every time I was out there. City Market, none, because it's private property. You really don't need a sound system, I tried a few times but too much of a hassle. If you have some more questions, PM me.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I went last weekend and set up on River street almost right where you described. I did a small set for groups of 10-15. I saw some really good performers there( the guy on the unicycle, juggling and then doing a straight jacket escape.) I made a grand total of $155 over a period from 11-6. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I am looking forward to going back and trying my act at the market.

Congrats. I never made that much, guess that's because I was only out there from about 2-4, made my 70 bucks and left. City Market dies out around 3. I would normally hit the market from whenever I got there until 3, then headed on down to River St. There's a guy in the market that own's a coffee shop next to a pizza place, he would always come out watch a show, then invite me in for a free frappe. Nice guy. I miss that place.

I moved to the Mississippi gulf coast to try to get into the corporate and casino venue, very slowly happening. But I miss the Carolina and Sav atmosphere.

If you decide to go to the SAM meeting in Hilton Head, let me know. I'll give you the name and number of the pres.

Kasper777,
I am actually from Augusta, and am a member of the Augusta IBM ring. Savannah is a great place to busk, its got tourists and a great atmosphere-I am going again when school is out during spring break in a couple of weeks. But I am also going to try out Downtown Augusta (it being Masters Week here and millions of people come in for it). All colleges and schools in the area are out at the same time because of the Masters so even this little city will have some tourists traffic.

But it can't beat Savannah...
