This DVD is outstanding - no surprise there, really
I have a Chinese Egg Bag and several home-made loop balls that haven't seen the light of day in years...they've been residing in my collection of unused props. This gave me reason to pull 'em out again, Cellini's handling is just so elegant. And anything that inspires me to work out things with props I already own is worth its weight in gold to me. shanester: I don't personally know of any commercially available loop balls, (Koz?), but it doesn't take a great deal of time to put one together; mine were made with 2-inch wooden craft store balls. 1)Take a file and create a flat spot at one point, the outer radius which coincides with that of the thumbtack that you now need to locate. 2) Push said thumbtack into center of the flat you just created, leaving a space under the head. 3) Tie the loop with the material of your choice (looks like I used 2 pound fishing monofilament, YMMV, and knot it underneath the tack head. 4) Drive the tack home, cut a short length of a drinking straw into which you'll push the loop while you paint the ball, so as not to paint the loop. 5) Add a couple coats of paint, let it dry, pop that DVD in the player and get to work ;-) (wow, maybe I should have sent this to the workshop, instead....) |

Just got my DVD today. An exellent purchase! Practical, usable material! Presented with Skilled ,Elegant Simplicity by an obvious master. If you want USABLE, stand-up, magical looking effects, you shouldn't be dissappointed.
I am having trouble locating the type of thread/yard that Cellini uses in his Gypsy Thread routine. WalMart here doesn't have it. Anyone know what this type is called? |

Nope, not the same type of yarn/thread that is needed for Cellini's version...

Am I the only one who noticed Cellini's performance was lackluster at best?
I got the overwhelming impression that he was bored and basically didn't care. This comment applies especially to the normal ball manipulation scene. Maybe it's just me? Disclaimer: On his worst day, he's still better than me on my best day, but he's also way better than he showed to be on this DVD. |

Two of my favorite DVDs of all times are Cellini's "Magic that can be performed Anywhere" and Vol 2 of the Cellini "Art of Street Performing" series. On these two DVDs is a lot of PRACTICAL visual relatively easy to do magic that is highly entertaining and able to be seen by crowds. Learn to perform the magic on these two DVDs and you are well on your way to having a practical street performing (or stage) set that packs small and plays big.
Just IMHO. Mike

Thanks BroDavid for the review and to Poindexter for the "how to" on the loop ball construction. I, too, am a Cellini fan. He lectured our club a couple of years ago and found his approach to magic enjoyable.
He said that he does not do the "knuckle busting" stuff anymore (age/arthritis) and went on to say, "Why should you if you can get the same reaction without the trouble." Personally, I found that refreshing. I have the 1st volume of The Art of Street Performing and really enjoy it. There is so much information shared on magic, style, performing, crowds, etc...that one should gain something, no matter what their performance level and skills are. I have waited on getting this DVD but will go on and order it. Thanks again for the recommendation. |
