I'm almost more blown away by the guy they mention in the article who broke the speed of sound jumping from 24 miles up.

Yeah I wondered about that too. I bet a zero or two were added, but knowing how rampantly bad on-line news, editing and typos are, it was probably incompetence (not on the jumper's part) more than anything else.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Back in the 60's out Student Body President at the University of Nevada died in jump where both chutes failed.
His parents had advised against his jumping but supported his choice. When they found out he was planning to jump that day, they went out to the site to observe his "moment of triumph, only to watch his fall and death 50 feet in front of them. Like Mary, I wonder if people doing things for "personal reasons" consider the impact on those who care about them. Not saying that one should not pursue a personal dream - even a dangerous one; just that it is selfish action and should be viewed as such. ... it the case at hand, I fear that others will now try this without the experience or preparation of this man. How many deaths before this is no longer an exciting challenge. No problem, the family can always sue the net manufacturer, or weather man, or friends that "let him do it." A question. Since a parachute is a device for slowing one's decent, isn't using a net actually a parachute?

Didn't Houdini also "defy death"? Submerged under water in a locked box? Like the sky jumper, Houdini had ample "experience". And in spite of us perhaps calling the action a 'magic effect', NOTHING was guaranteed! (And we all know that some magic effects can go terribly wrong). That said, we don't have to really applaud this as 'history being made'!(eg I appreciate David Blaine's close up stuff much more than him being encased in ice). But we can certainly appreciate the 'daredevil's' feat for being well thought out and completed. And as we've often heard in daredevil shows, "don't try this at home." Lynn

Not every new record means anything.
Test pilots, Scientist who work around dangerous diseases, Cops and the like risk their lives and I respect them. They have worried Parents too but I think it must be easier to understand the sacrifice if ,God forbid, the worst happens. We are free to applaud if we wish. I will not applaud a foolhardy endangerment of life that will surely inspire others to such feats. I would feel complicit in their death if I did. Had I been around in Houdini's time I'm pretty sure I would not have been a fan. I certainly don't enjoy escapes or death defying acts today. They don't seem to miss my applause. That's just me. -Mary Mowder |

I hear you, Mary.
According to the article, "As cheers erupted, Aikins quickly climbed out, walked over and hugged his wife, Monica, who had been watching from the ground with their 4-year-old son, Logan, and other family members." (Emphasis added.) While Logan is most certainly quite proud of his father, some day, when he is a father himself, he might question his father's priorities. Why let your four-year-old child keep you from living your dream? |

I'm not quite ready to write this off as meaningless, as eg compared to Evel Kneivel trying to cross the Grand Canyon on a rocket powered motorcycle. Anti-suicide nets are already in use on bridges (one is scheduled to be built on the Golden Gate Bridge). Aikin's motive obviously doesn't seem to be to advance science; but this jump may in fact end up doing that! Perhaps it is 'foolhardy', but I'm not sold on meaningless!
And as for test pilots...well some of them.... just thinking of the "The Right Stuff"! Lynn |

I had a uncle who was a test pilot. He was a bit of an adrenaline junkie but at least he found a way to channel it towards some real advances.
I can't believe the guy did this jump in front of his child. -Mary |

Gee Mary,
It seems like for once we agree. I don't mind that he tried what I think is a stupid and pointless stunt. I understand all the Physics he had to deal with, including going from about 120 miles per hour to zero in the distance of the height of the net. That can't have felt good. People who are shot out of cannons say it is like experiencing two car accidents in less than thirty seconds. What I don't like is the kid being present. That is not fair to do to the kid. The kid believes that Daddy is a super daddy and will be fine. THIS TIME that was true. I have dealt with this issue with my wife and daughter and some of the escapes I do. I actually tipped one early to them because I saw that it might scare them and I did not want that. I would rather them think I fool and defraud people for their entertainment. I also remember Mick Foley (Professional wrestler) Watching a tape of one of his silly antics. His hands are cuffed behind him, and he is hit over the head with a chair by The Rock. That would be business as usual for a pro-wrestler, but this video Mick was watching showed his very concerned looking wife with his two crying children standing by watching. Mick said something like, "Maybe I am not as good a father as I thought I was." I agreed. Note: I guess his daughter liked the show at some level though, she is now early 20's and trying to become a wrestler herself. Stunts are fine, but lets be aware of the audience.
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right! |
