Just received an email from Tannen's Magic. What do you all think of the Blackbird Coin Holdout by Jeff Copeland?

I pre-ordered it. Based on the truthfulness of the trailer alone I think it will be a hit. There is a pretty large thread where the maker chimes in with more info http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=218
That all being said... I look for it to hit the second hand market not long after its release (just a prediction). I think a lot of newer magicians are going to realise there is actually a little work to sleeving and are gonna bail out rather than put in the extra work and time on another genre of coin sleight. I have been playing with the idea for a while now and Blackbird came out at the right time for me. I also think this will be a great addition to those who use Sean Goodman's Secret Servante.

Thanks for the mention Poof-Daddy. Blackbird is a way to produce two coins, one down each sleeve. Each Blackbird unit holds one coin. If you are also looking to ditch them too, then Secret Servante can certainly help here. Having said that, you can also produce multiple coins (4 half dollars or 3 dollars) with one SS unit or double it with two units. The method of obtaining the coins is different, but both require the hand being dropped by your side.
Whatever suits you really. I look forward to hearing how you're going to use it buddy - have fun. Cheers Sean

I will be ordering one of these. This will be perfect for my Triple Threat coin.

Bluesman, I was just thinking the same thing. Ordered mine and can't wait to start working with this. This with the AG47 video(that was to ship with this item) will produce some killer routines .

I'm curious if it will HOLD a Triple threat or similar gimmick.

Can they carry Morgan dollar size coin? Or just half dollars?

FrankHorng: I was watching some videos and it looks like the units are made to hold silver dollars (I think he's using Morgans in the video) and also come with inserts which reduce the size for use with half dollars. I've ordered mine and I'm picking it up today!

I asked in the latest and greatest forum about a Morgan and a shell and the creator himself was not sure if they would both fit. (It looks in the vid like there is a hair extra room). So I guess, be careful. (I too am hopeful about an expanded shell on a Morgan too)

Personally I'm holding off on this, mainly because I rarely wear long sleeves and the Secret Servanté works great for my needs. AAMOF, I think I'll pick me up another Secret Servanté for the other side.

Got mine today. Watched all 3+ hours of instructions and love it. Posted a little more in the latest and greatest thread. This is probably my first ever pre-order (or first in a long time if I ever did before) and I am very pleased with mine (along with all the great routines).

It was reviewed on WPR today, didn't get too good of marks. They basically said it does work well as advertised, and is very well made. But it seemed to be something more like an amateur or beginner would play with as a toy. Not something for workers. Will be curious to hear what real world people think.

On Aug 9, 2016, pepka wrote: In a nutshell, no. I found a Morgan inside a shell as well as a Walker inside a shell to be too thick to pass thru. It will however holdout a shell by itself. He states on the download that it will work with a precision gimmick. I have a couple shells that do work (alone, if I wanted to ring in a shell during a routine at some point after the coins were all examined) and, I have one that won't work (it is an old junky one that I barely use anyway). I tried several coins and had success with most. He shows a bunch of different coins from his working collection that work and they are pretty much the same coins most of us in the US use. The dollar size copper rounds do not work in it. They are a hair larger than a Morgan and a hair thicker I believe. Possible a cut down set would work or he does teach (but does not recommend) how to customize the device for larger coins. The customization for smaller coins like a quarter is ok and easy. WPR did an honest review, they won't use it so it automatically drops below 90 (I really don't understand why the other points got dropped as they agreed how well it was made, worked and quality routines) but that is ok. I am not a 14 year old but am "newer" to serious coin magic and sleeving in general, so I will use it. As far as wearing it all the time and having to keep a jacket on, I wouldn't find that to be a problem. You could unhook them thru the sleeve and carefully take the jacket off and put it away (just as you could wearing a Topit, or having a dozen gizmos hanging on safety pins inside) I would say if you are a beginner, read your Bobo, practice and if you think sleeving is for you, this is a nice addition. (As well as Jim's suggestion of utilizing 2 Secret Servante devices. I do that in addition) (only one though at present, but considering a second). If you are a seasoned coin worker. You pretty much know exactly what you are getting from the very honest trailer and as a little time goes by you will hear the pro's and cons to decide if this is something you want to add. It is a well made device that should stand up to a lot of use. There are DIY alternatives that would work but this is so well made and well thought out (as far as size, profile, interchangeability... That I feel it was money well spent.) plus you really get enough solid workers, as far as routines, taught well that I would say seriously offsets the cost of the device.

Confirming Poof Daddy...does not work with a expanded [ or a double face triple but it Works flawlessly with Morgan's (both real and replicas) Eisenhower's, ArtiFact dollar and half dollar. Kennedy, Walking Liberty, Barbers and English Penny.
Works as described. Well made and I think it could be modified to work with a expanded [ or other gimmicks. |

I see the only draw back on this gimmick is that it cannot be reloaded easily. Therefore it would be great for formal Close-up shows and stage work. Much better then sewing pockets in your jacket sleeves as Roco suggests and does for his work.
The Secret Servante has better usability. |

You can reload it. I think it would take quite a bit of practice to reload it quickly but it can be reloaded as easily as pushing your sleeves up to show "nothing up my sleeve" and you could "load and lock" in the process. (The device can be loaded from front or back.
As for the SS, yes, it is more useful. You can hold more coins and it is simple to load/unload. But, they both have their place. ( I plan on using both together)

I also have a Lassen Miracle Enjoyment Set (Chinese Dollar Size) and it fits (but not with the ] on. Just like a Morgan)
Joker brand coins in half and dollar size Triception gaffs in both Walker and Morgan Joe Mogar's magical Morgans These are some additional gaff coins I have tried. As stated before, smaller coins like quarters need a little arts and crafts, a bit larger coins, if you absolutely had to, it can be done and he shows how but it requires some serious alteration that can't be taken back.
