I like several but I particularly recall seeing certain things live for the first time, like Lance's swordfight, Blackstone's floating bulb (as well as Lance's cage), Origami, Deathsaw, and just about anything that Copperfeild did. The impact that these had (and still have) left me completely stunned. I will stand out, however, by saying that I never really did like Copperfeild's Flying. I saw it live when I was 15. This was before it was on T.V., and to me the method was obvious. David did a great job with it that night, but I remember hearing other people discuss the method as well, while waiting in line for an autograph. I honestly don't think that the illusion fooled half of the people in that theater...
Anyway, if I had to pick one favorite, I'd say Moretti's sword box. I had been into magic for a long time when I first saw this, and got that stunned feeling again- pure magic. Phil |

Lusion, when I can afford a helicopter and nessisary props...which is never. well it isn't really entirely my idea, its not completely revolutionary. so threfore my favourite illusions as a whole would be things that dissapear or substitute. david Copperfield's cacoon is my favourite illusion to watch, the lighting and everything in that effect is incredible.
Its not what you do, but how you do it.

Wow, where to start....
From Copperfield... The Lotto prediction After Hours (asrah) Passions Prison (metamorphisis) Snow. The Wakeling Saw (I think Mark Kalin & Jinger did this on tv once). And I love Mike Super's Vodoo Magic finale. Totally funny! Robert

Henning performed a mini version of the mirror penetration on the Today Show years ago, where he pushed a silk, then a sponge ball through a mirror...I never could understand how something like that can be accomplished.. ..
I always will remember the Eclipse illusion I saw at the Abbotts Get Together....cool...

I like David Copperfields Flying and also the one with the mini pyramid in which he gets sucked into it and the sides are dropped within seconds.
2nd place for me would go to the Pendragons. I am not sure of the name of the "act", but it involved a picture of a woman and Barry Manilows (I am pretty sure that is the artist) song playing "When Will I See You Again" playing. He produced a woman from the picture, danced with her and then placed her back in the picture frame. Very emotional and well performed.

For me Harbin´s Zig Zag still rules (when performed right). Copperfield´s version of Metamorphosis (Cocoon?), is the most beautiful thing ever. Lance Burton´s double levitation is also so beautiful. And most recently, Clearly Impossible of the Pendragon´s is my favorite.

Another vote for Flying - an artistic triumph, not a nightmare at all.
Other Copperfield - Lottery routine, Portal (best ever vanish IMO), and Voyeur (2nd best ever vanish, and stunning cloth work for the reappearance). Cocoon is beautiful as well, Jonathan Pendragon's cloth handling is superb, and the moment is a real eye-popper. |

Can't ever forget Doug Henning at the Academy Awards doing the Sawing in half with two ladies one black one white and then switching the boxes after the split and putting them back together mismatched. I was 9 years old and will never forget it.

I too am a big fan of Copperfield's flying. I recently seen Cyril's version of a glass penetration (using an aquarium) that I thought was far superior to Blaine's. I just like Cyril's performance and long buildup to the illusion unlike Blaine who took half a second to stick his arm through the jewlery shop window.

Levitating Light Bulb.
And if anyone has a levitating light bulb illusion and wants to sell it I'm in the market. Does anyone have video footage of there favorite illusion? If so I'd love to see it. |

Probably flying, and also the first time I saw Copperfield perform The Blade. It was before he had it perfected for TV and both sides of the boxes were opened at the same time with the girl, in half, waving from both sides of the stage.

Just watched DC's "Flying" again on my video iPod, for the umpteenth time.
Yes, I've seen it live a few times. Yes, I know all about it. For me, it's still the most breathtaking illusion in history. Why? Other illusions may be "bigger" or more "dangerous." But none, for me, carry the emotional wallop of DC's presentation. No telling how many minds went into creating "Flying." But every theatrical element -- from the opening scrim to the fog machine to the falcon to the slowly moving lights on the cyclorama to the "clouds" to the audience members onstage to the giant hoops and the plexiglass box to the music to the choreography of DC and his assistants to that final image of the falcon returning to fly away with DC . . . I don't know: for me "Flying" is an unparalleled merging of illusion with all the theatrical arts. Wordless, "Flying" is in fact "pantomime." It is something Charlie Chaplin would have done, were he able. Genius. Sure, DC has a "team." But it's HIS team. His vision and skills have brought them together. And DC, finally, is the one who presents them. IMHO, he's the greatest illusionist so far. I have a feeling it'll be awhile, if ever, that another replaces him. Oh, yeah. The neatest trick is to save "Flying" (or any other YouTube video) to your iPod. Here's your link. http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/tutorials/youtuberip/ |
