I know this effect is 5 years old, but I'm surprised there's no thread about this in this forum, so...
Having just read this yesterday, I can say this is one of the best telepathy effects I've seen so far... The method it's nothing new (I'm sure it was by the time this was released) but the presentation... oh man, the presentation and staging for this effect it's just WONDERFUL!! (Imagine I'm saying this in a deep Eugene Burger's voice) WONDERFUL! It reads like a fairly long routine (Maybe 5, 6 minutes?) but it's never boring... once you start getting into the presentation you just can't get out, is that good! I don't have a lot of stage experience, but with the little experience I have I can imagine just how powerful this routine plays in front of a lay audience. This was an inspiring reading, and I probably won't use Ron's presentation word for word, but then again, the presentation and the script is so beautiful that I'm veeery tempted to perform it exactly as described! I perform in Spanish anyway, no one will know I stole Ron's presentation I Love this, I really love it! Thank you Ron for putting this out! And you guys, if you haven't, you should check it out. PS- I don't recommend this to you if you are a beginner, or if you don't like (or aren't good at) story telling. E.E. can you give us a general idea of what happens in this piece. The description at Penguin and Steven's is very vague. Thanks!

It's not easy to condense this piece into a two of three sentence breakdown, and of respect for Ron's work here, I feel I need to be as general as possible. Though, I will try and give you enough of an idea where you can the gist of what is going on.
Essentially, you lead the spectator through a narrative in which she mentally visualizes a scenario that takes place on a sunny day at the beach. As you lead her through this narrative and as things progress, you are standing behind this seated spectator (whose back is towards you, as she is facing the audience) and drawing this scene out on a pad, as it plays out in real time. You explain there is a man on this beach with her and she visualizes that person and puts a name to his face, then a child who is in the midst of creating something, etc and so forth. And with each new person or thing that is added to this narrative, you are literally drawing the scene out directly behind her, predicting that which she has yet to name out loud, sometimes a letter at a time, sometimes the whole word in one shot. Though the methodologies differ in several important and significant ways, there is some semblance to the "Dream Vacation' plot in the sense that the story continues to build upon itself in a progressive manner with a narrative thrust that leads to shocking and seemingly impossible reveal, And perhaps it also owes a debt of gratitude to an Earle thing, as well (and though I won't name it outright, if you think about it and do the research, you might find yourself on the right track). But I provide these only as reference points because Ron's work certainly deserves to stand alone as a piece on its own. In the rights hands, this can be a great set piece to add to your arsenal...if it suits your character and you have the charisma, experience and know-how to really sell it. It is a very theatrical piece and requires a certain self-assuredness and steady-handedness to lead the participant and the audience down a path and keep them interested as only the best storytellers know how. Case in point, I've seen this routine receive audible gasps (from both the participant on stage and the audience at large0 on more than on occasion. But I can also quite easily see this falling flat in the hands of less experienced performer, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the hard-fought presence, personality, and gravitas that comes with having performed on stage for many years. I hope that helps. |

I'd like to add more praise here. This is a wonderful routine that uses a standard method but turns it into a piece of theater. I am really impressed with what Ron has done here.

I received an eBook. It may still be available as a printed book directly from Ron as well.
