Fireballs
This looks very effective Great end But… Self-working? I’m sure there were obvious sleights after every cup lift By obvious I mean, I could see them… and I know that my ‘audience’ are always looking for how things are done and so misdirection isn’t always going to work when I have three or four specs. In the video it obviously a different ‘ball’ under the first cup – as the shape is totally different. But that doesn’t really matter. My worry is the moves. Other than that, I think it’s a great trick. I like the ending. I just hope many of the tricks I haven’t seen; on the video have equally strong endings I should note I saw the four YouTube clips for Automata 2 and wasn’t impressed with them in comparison to this or the next trick |

Metal Sheep
I like this one, although I don’t think I need the explanation It feels like simple maths suggest he should only have two coins in his right hand So that would suggest a gaff This would suggest there is a coin that the audience can’t examine So I think he’s very brave to just leave them out there for a bit at the end… there’s definitely a ‘penny’ that I would be conscious to scoop up and away ASAP I do like this one It’s not earth shattering – it’s a nice simple segue trick Which is what I asked for, so it fits the bill perfectly |

P.s. do you do metal sheep – if you do, do you know the best place to buy a special coin [?] and what about the fireballs [paper/cups is there a good place to get them?]
CARD 2 MATCHBOX I’m not looking at card tricks, and I have FOB on the way. So this will be an entertainment on watch for me. KINGPINS I don’t really see much attraction in this from the description – maybe after seeing the effect my mind will be changed FREE PHONE This seems to be a 1 in 3 shot – so not that impressive, even if it was real [not a trick] POKER CHEAT These type effects seem stale to me, which means even if I try and present it as fresh – I probably don’t have the belief in this type of effect to sell that truthfully. By stale I mean, if I saw a top magician doing something like this, I would know that the choices wouldn’t matter as it’s more of a puzzle or a cheat… equivoque. My guess is one of the ten cards always grants a win – so the magician just needs that card. THIRTY FOUR I’m on the fence for this one and the last two, so will see how I feel when I see them BIRTHDAY CARD PRINCESS REDUX Bit weird to be doing a pre review of a DVD I don't have yet |

Ok I can see you're underwhelmed although as you say it is a little odd/difficult to review something you haven't got. Think about taking a peek at the review by others on the Café about these routines on vols 1 & 2.
If you want magic that is technically simple/easy, then inherently there are sometimes (not always) going to be some of the issues that you suggest such as gaffes or a method that you might think is 'obvious' (in fact, they rarely are spotted by laymen - especially with a good presentation or maybe with a touch of sleight of hand thrown in. I've adopted one already into my set & admittedly added some sleight of hand, nothing too advanced though). Another technique of course to throw laymen off the scent is to use audience management etc. This particularly protects against them wanting to inspect something that might be gaffed. However I could add that, again, a bit of audience management helps a lot here - as does a bit of sleight of hand to switch out the gaffe (depending on the routine).

I do have Vol 1 [now]
It’s in a queue – currently going through 12 hours of DVDs [13 steps] on mentalism I wanted to post a ‘session’ report – but couldn’t work out where [or if there is a place] to do so on here. As it would include a few secrets. But it felt like a massive risk, and only worked because of ‘on the fly’ audience management. I had planned everything and ‘moved’ it, to a perfect place… but I built it up too much – and too many people stayed to watch. I knew this was going to go down in flames – site lines killed me. So I was outwardly calm, inwardly desperately working on a solution. I found a reason, and took a placement/set up – that gave me back the lack of damaging angles. It felt like such a con. I thought it was obvious what I was doing [how I was doing it] – but laymen [even ones who are always trying to burn or work things out] are laymen. Not only did I convince them of my ‘genius’ – but all week I have had messages of them trying and failing to achieve the same result – and I did my ‘feat’ not looking [much harder, ahem] I’m glad that my years of stage work has me very aware of both staging and the self-awareness of when to move/change things. I’m still going to have to work on my fear of being ‘caught’ – and the feeling that moves/slights or rather distractions – aren’t going to work. I walked past a magician [street performer] in Covent Garden today [Sunday]. He did a couple of very ‘old’ / standard tricks. Nothing exciting or modern. But he really lifted them ‘off the page’ – and made them his own. I of course was watching the ‘moves’ – just fascinating to see how ‘obvious’ some of them were – but how his distractions moved almost everyone’s eyes to somewhere else. I was very impressed with his performance. |
