Hello,
I have been a magic hobbyist for the past three years and own a relatively large collection of magical props and DVDs. Sadly however, there are very few tricks that I can do without gaffs and gimmicks. I lack most of the fundamental basics of magic skills. I gave up on legit card magic a couple years ago when almost every move failed due to my very small hands (I am 5'4" so my hands are really tiny). I wanted to give it all another shot and start actually putting time and practice into learning magic again, but I am not sure where to start. I am looking for resources to learn tricks that I will actually use and be proud to learn. So far I don't dare to call myself a magician, but I'd really like to be so in the near future. I want to always be ready for that "show me a trick" moment. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. P.S. I am not a very big fan of card magic in general and of old-school magic. I prefer the more hip and casual magic style where I could entertain at a social gathering and so forth. |

Hello Midozak,
You have come to the right place, the Magic Café is choc full of experienced pros who can nudge you in the right direction. For questions regarding guidance, you can first search the new to magic forum and the subforums catering to different types/styles of magic. Follow these two threads: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 and http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 They contain a plethora of information about books and DVDs beginners should pick up. For basics of card magic, I highly recommend Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Magic. I am a beginner too and I find it absolutely wonderful. Just read through the New to Magic section and you will have more than enough info to start with. You can always ask specific questions that the pros will definitely answer. And welcome to the Café again. Soumyajit

As for the other stuff you might want to learn some sleight of hand. Learn some coin stuff or sponge balls. But in all honesty you should just revisit the materials you have and work with those. Don't make your height an issue. |

Sponge balls are a fine way to start learning basic sleights, because they're relatively easy to handle.
You might also do some searches on "impromptu" magic. If you're looking for something that's laid back and fits in a social gathering, that might be a good field of magic to explore.
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

For example, the famous advanced card sleight, the Classic Pass, is excluded from the 8-volume series. For Beginner's Card Magic, if you are a visual learner, I'd recommend the following: (1) Born to Perform Card Magic by Oz Pearlman (2) Card College 1 and 2 (4-DVD Set) by Roberto Giobbi (3) How To Do Miracle Card Tricks by Adam Wilber and Peter McKinnon |

I gave up on legit card magic a couple years ago when almost every move failed due to my very small hands. Have you tried working with bridge-sized cards? They're a bit narrower, which might help you a bit. Here's a thread on the poker vs. bridge card size debate: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=2

The hand thing might very well be in your head.
I also have very small hands and when I started out with cardistry/flourishing I wasn´t able to do a thumb cut...so many things did seem impossible with my small hands. And I thought I should give up on cardistry because my hands are too small. But...it all comes down to pracitce...improve dexterity....work your way around difficulties. There are very skilled childs out there, Lee Asher has very small hands and then there´s Mahdi Gilbert, he doesn´t even have hands, performs card magic and fooled Penn and Teller! And...i advice against using bridge sized cards. I also thought I would have to use them....but gladly I sticked to poker sized cards. Here is a video by Aaron Fisher about small hands and why not to use bridge sized cards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re2G6XWzBTA |

Don't give up! No matter what, regardless of whether you have small hands, tricks take practice. The human mind is an incredible thing, and can overcome endless obstacles, but unfortunately, can also create them. Don't let yourself fall into the idea that you can't do magic- no one can perform every trick. Also, it could be that after enough time and practice, your hands will have built up the muscle memory to perform tricks you previously couldn't.
You can do it! |
