Dear everyone,

Given that the serial number on a british bill consists of two letters of the alphabet followed by eight single digit numbers, how many possible combinations of serial numbers are there?

I would very much appreciate the help of anyone who is mathematically inclined.
I'd love to have this number so I can incorporate it into my bill divination presentation.

Thanks to anyone who can help.
Regards,
Stephen

Think it goes like this:

26*26*10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10
=
26˛*10^8
=
67600000000 different serial numbers

Stephen,

Maths is not my strong point, but the number of possible permutations as I understand them is:

67,600,000,000

As credit may be given for showing working Smile, that's: 26 x 26 x 100,000,000.

Obviously, this number's a bit of a mouthful, so it's probably easier to refer to it as 67.6 Billion. (That's the more common American Billion, BTW.)

In other words, near enough ten bills for every person on the planet.

Regards,

Caleb Strange.

(Ahem, if you caught my original post.)

Caleb,

It's been a while since I've seen you post in these parts.
Welcome back.

And my sincerest thanks go to both Amens and Caleb for helping me out on this.
The 'ten bills (or 'notes' if you're a Brit) for everyone on the planet' statistic is extremely handy indeed.
Thanks, thanks, and thanks again.

Many thanks for the welcome back, Stephen - and also for your tact it in not mentioning my post edit Smile.

Caleb Strange.
