Are any of you familiar with Austrian 4 Ducat coins? I have seen some photos of these and they look like they would make nice coins for those effects where you would like to have something more "exotic-looking". They seem to be about the size of a silver dollar.
I realize the real ones are gold, but there are some replicas on the market I might use, if they are suitable. Thanks, Amos McCormick

According to this Web site, http://www.taxfreegold.co.uk/austrian4ducats.html, this coin is 40mm, whereas a US dollar is 38.1mm. This is a difference of 1.9mm, or a little over 1/16". Is that much of a difference okay for you?
By the way, in Toronto's Chinatown yesterday, I found a few dozen silver coins from South Africa, Cuba, Hong Kong and some other countries, all of which I figured to be US dollar-size, and they were only $3 each. There were some fairly exotic looking ones. Maybe your friendly, neighburhood Chinatown antique/souvenir shop can help? Cheers!

Not a bad looking coin. Nothing near as pretty as our Twenty Dollar gold coin. The two headed bird... very strange. Yes they are gold coins. Nothing like the CLUNK of a gold coin as opposed the the RING of silver or the CLICK of the stuff we have today.

As much as I would like to experience the "clunk" you are referring to (gold), I will probably have to put up with the "click" of a replica version, for about $150 less.
Dan, I would be interested in finding out what the other dollar-sized coins were that you saw in the store. I am just looking for something more exotic than what we see every day. Thanks, Amos McCormick

Clunck, Click and Ring?
Man ,Jon really has a way with words;-) I think the coin looks very beautiful. As for the two headed eagle, I have it as well on a 5 kopek coin from Russia (1830's). Wonder what it means?

Early version of King Gidorah? Looks both ways in case of Godzilla (Gojira).

As far as the double-headed eagle, it is the armorial design (coat of arms) of the Russian Tsars. Why it would be on an Austrian coin, though, I'm not sure...

Since I originally started this topic, I have found out that the Austrian 4 ducat coins are only 0.7mm thick. That's probably too thin for what I am trying to do with them.
I have since found some Chinese coins (actually I think they might be medals) that commemorate each of the Chinese years (dragon, horse, etc.). These look exotic enough to be usable in my routine, but I think they are quite a bit thicker. Amos McCormick

Eagle = imperial symbol
2-headed eagle = imperial sovereignty over east and west, dates back to late Roman Empire, used subsequently by Byzantine, Austrian, & Russian empires. |
