All,
I've been performing magic for quite a while but just recently started to get into mentalism and shock magic. Are there any good books/dvd's you recommend to get more into cold reading? Thank you! |

I would recommend you The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading by Ian Rowland. It is a very complete work on cold reading, but it requires serious sessions of studying.

Mentalism and shock magic. That is not a combination I would have guessed.

Learn to give readings. Choose a system. Just do it.

The shut-eye material (real systems) are cheaper and more reliable. Some say that the CR material by common mentalists will set you back years.
1. If you prefer the psychic approach, consider astrology, palm reading, tea leaves, crystals... 2. If you prefer the cultural approach, consider I-Ching, cards, drawings, archetypal dream interpretation (Jung)... 3. If you prefer the psychological approach, consider scientific dream interpretation (Freud), handwriting analysis, ink blots or projective tests, Luscher Color Test

In my book 7 mysteries you have a learning process to start doing cold Reading. I consider a good way to start with simple excercises and ideas so you can move on more complex systems

(The website was glitching like crazy when I tried to click "like" on your last post. All the posts above were duplicated and squeezed into a narrow band inside the post--really weird looking. I sure am glad we are not superstitious!)
Between the synopsis here and your posts in the Cartomancy thread, I can piece together a little. I know you use a table, set out but don't use often some possibly aids-infected runestones, make money, and don't like asking a lot of questions. I know you use intuition and observation as much as the cards. I know your goal is to provide a service more than a show. I know you learn much from casual remarks even before you start with palm reading. You said you get real information from the hands but I don't know if it's Sherlock Holmes-like deduction (rings, callouses, mannerisms, etc.) or something palm reading really tells. I know your knowledge builds over the course of the reading--I assume from reactions and responses and more intuition--until you reach 100% of the sitter's issues or story. You have my heartfelt thanks for everything you have shared so far, and I even appreciate the lost post!

Maybe to give the opinion of another beginner: I really enjoy reading through this thread, since the discussion that is going on, is quite interesting.
To comment on one thing that came up: The advice (no pun intended...I think), not to give advice to people doing readings, is a paradox. As soon as I open my mouth, I inevitably will be trying to argue my point. Just like I am doing now, just in writing. It is impossible not to give advice while communicating with someone else. Just looking up the etymology of the word "advice" (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=advice) shows that you cannot make a sentence like "don't give advice to People" without knowing that it doesn't make sense. I think I know what is meant by this phrasing, but putting the statement "don't give advice to people you are giving readings to" out there, is just to broad a Statement I think. It is so broad that is basically means nothing at all. The most staggering advice I ever got was...None! Some time back, I asked someone with way more life experience, who knows me well, about current Problems I had back then. The advice I got was (when I specifically asked him for advice!) a very subtle and friendly smile, some shaking of his head as a "no" to my request. This got me thinking way more than anything else he could have said and it helped me immensely. He only could do that because of he knew me well, and (very probably) knew that this would get me started. But still, it was advice. So if one really wants to stay within the realms of what is ethical, just do that. Be ethical, in whatever Framework that maybe. If your ethical Framework goes beyond the boundaries of the law, then one will have a problem. If it goes beyond the boundaries of what's socially accepted, then one will habe a Problem as well. (and yes...I know that even this Framework might be as bad as the one which is given by "don't give advice"). Maybe the Statement that Ian Rowland gave in his Penguin lecture is the best description of "how to give a cold reading", where he says: "Just be nice to People!" |
