Part of the reason is because you're watching a video. I doubt you'll see the switch so easily in real life. I have so many people that told me their palming of coins/card, and coin passes are so bad that they thought I will see through their move, but generally that didn't happen. In real life, there is a misdirection that isn't there in a video.

I agree totally but why would you post such a poor video as it doesn't help sales imo .

As many of you know, it's very difficult to misdirect a camera. While veiwing something on video everything is in frame, and inside of your sightline.
I've performed this in real world situations many times, and it flies right by everyone. The visual change looks very magical and is truly surprising to the spectators. You also have the additional WOW factor because it happens in the spectators hands. I encourage you to give it a try and you'll see what I mean!!

I agree with you John just seemed a strange demo to post as obviously from a camera point of view looks poor , in real performance it probably flies and after all honesty is the best policy in an ideal world , so bravo for that

As Magicians we know what to look for when we watch effects or routines. We look for the palms, ditches, steals, switches, sleights and finger flicking. In this case the effect by John T. Sheets is an absolute killer! Just because you can see the ditch/switch doesn't mean it's not going to fool layperson. Question to ask yourself is do laypeople know what to look for? Answer absolutely not. How many times do you watch a live magic show and sometimes you don't see the method. But when you watch a show or effect on a TV or a computer screen it's easy to see the method because there is no misdirection.
John is one of the most creative minds and magic and he's not gonna put something out there that is not tested over and over in the real world. His new DVD Cool Cash has this effect on it that is great. Not only is this effect great but there's other effects on there that the method and the thought behind it is phenomenal.

On Sep 7, 2016, John T. Sheets wrote: I gotta agree with those who think that was not a great performance of this switch, and I will add the all seeing eye has very little to do with this. The direction of motion is completely wrong. There is absolutely no guise of switching the folded bill into the other hand. None at all! There is a folded bill in one hand, and then the stack of bills goes on top of that. That hand continues away taking the attention off the other hand. Then magically a folded bill appears in what should be the empty other hand. Given the choreography and timing it makes no sense, which attracts the brain to this error. As executed on this video you would be a fool to do this strolling. You will get busted. It isn't hard to get this right or alter it to make this a better working switch. The choreography should be one of two things. A) The folded bill and the stack of bills should switch hands with visual understanding that no one ever lost sight of the folded bill. B) The stack of bills is placed in the same hand as the folded bill, the empty hand is now used to adjust the spectators hand in some way, and then the switched folded bill is retrieved from the hand with the bills. The prior requires immaculate timing and choreography to keep the visual feel that the folded bill has never left our sight. The latter has far more leeway in physical action and relies more heavily on attitude and psychology to sell the idea that the folded gaff is really the originally folded bill. Each has their pluses and minuses. In the hundreds of DVD shoots I was part of, the performers would quietly ask me to keep an eye out for things just like this. It's because they knew me and trusted me to be brutally honest with them such that they could ask to reshoot situations like this. These performers had no concept of what the camera was catching unless they were allowed to watch parts of the day's shooting, which became much easier when fully digital video came to be. The camera guys were not performers, they were great at getting the necessary shots, but they couldn't watch for all the flashes and flubs which might occur. You can say I'm overqualified to be judging this video, but it was busted by others far less experienced in the matter than I. The truth is easy to see. This was not a good take of the move. The camera excuse is not valid in this case. |

Where is the spectator looking? Not at the switch....ive done 30,000 shows completely surrounded.....and I can tell you NO ONE is going to see this....use the switch you want...youre missing the point'

I fully agree Kozmo. I just don't understand why nobody can just enjoy the magic and not critique every little move. If you don't like the move you can always change it to something that suits you best.

I agree that the camera is unforgiving and yet the spectator who is participating in the routine in most cases will not see that switch. However anyone else watching will probably see it clearly. There are a few ways to make the switch more invisible and hopefully anyone purchasing Cool Cash knows how to do this well. If not then maybe they need to work on their SOH a bit more!
Thanks! Jim |

Sorry I didn't mean to start a great debate on this effect it does appears great . I was was on the original assumption that someone else had posted their video of their own performance and I personally thought the switch was very unconvincing . I didn't even believe the spectator in the demo believed it was the same bill either that's how bad it came across to me . It certainly wouldn't put me off buying it personally as I know other switches but if I didn't then it would most certainly would . To me it had the cringe factor you see at many conventions when other magicians go along with the classic force because they feel bad selecting the card they really want to rather than spoil the effect and it just looked totally transparent to me . Anyway if you are from the school of thought that everything flies past every layman then good luck to you . I am with Tom Cutts on this and believe there has to be a reason or motivation at least for your action not something totally illogical as this jumped straight out at me . Just my thoughts yours may and many do vary . I think a lot of lay people are kind and even if they bust you won't say anything anyway which again most of you probably disagree with me on . They play along not to spoil it for you the magician or others who did miss the move as the end effect may still be very good 😊

Tarik, there's no problem with your earlier comments. I think most people here would agree with everything you've said. I would not be surprised either if the spectator in this video is wondering what happened "I thought the folded bill was in his right hand, but it's in his left hand ?". That doesn't mean he will understand there was a switch but his mind may think something unnatural happened.
People are unforgiving when an unknown guy here or elsewhere is posting his own (bad) performance. The comments are rather hostile, as people say you should practice enough to be good at it before sending such a video to be publicly viewed by everyone - one reason being fear of exposure. So, if a renowned magician does a bad performance, why should we be forgiving ? So, I perfectly understand you want to let us know that you are not satisfied with such promo videos. |

It reminds me of First Hand by Justin Miller, which was a killer effect (and I still use it). But what is pointed out here is the promo video. A move that should have well hidden is totally exposed here. |
