The company I work for as a designer, Trevi, is actually working on Mosul dam, some of my colleagues and friends are working there with a two years long contract. After reading that news I am really concerned about their safety. |

It is a dangerous place in a dangerous time. Wishing for the best for your friends and colleagues.

Of course, I hope your colleagues and friends stay safe.
For context, the Mosul Dam is already in great danger of collapse simply from disrepair. Back in March, millions of people were warned to leave its flood-path for that reason. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/mosu......9569107/ http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideas......CN0WW1HP

If Mosul dam collapses, it will be an unbeliveable disaster, a large part of Iraq will be flooded. Trevi group is there to fix the dam and almost 500 Italian soldiers and Kurdish Peshmerga are there to protect the place. I really hope that no fight will take place

Does hope really work?

I also hope your colleagues and friends stay safe. That being said, if Trevi follows the U.S. contractors' business models then the salaries are commensurate with the risk. Typical starting "base" salary for an American contractor in Iraq (not including "perks") is $100k per year and service is voluntary. It is some of the most lucrative compensation available for the "average" person. Unfortunately the military personnel do not share this model and have equal or higher risk depending on the situation.

A different perspective, fwiw:
http://www.dw.com/en/mosul-dam-engineers......19214468 "US warnings that the Mosul Dam in Iraq is on the verge of collapse are mostly propaganda, local engineers say who have worked on it for years."

Well what is the point of hoping when it is only the action that really matters?

When the Kurds have reconquered the dam maintenance work started again but inconsistently and with inadequate equipment. The water dissolves the chalk in the ground where the foundations are based, creating dangerous cavities. I don't see any propaganda, the contract value is about 270 millions of euros, for that amount of money some works may be done... Anyway, I'm concerned about safety of people down there, people I personnally know. |

I was thinking more of them there in the presence of danger, one best either fight or run away from danger rather than stand there hoping. The engines describe the government response as ‘ridiculous’. I mean it seems they are merely hoping it holds. I guess all we can is demand that they act.

What creeped me out was the last sentence of the linked article, which said that the US bombed the power plant connected to the dam in 1991. This was a fact and not a matter of "propaganda"; but it does color what US officials (who warned of weapons of mass destruction) claim. Whatever the case, dams need constant maintenance; and I do share concern with the original topic poster for his friends' safety. Even maintenance, especially in the Middle East, is hazardous. Lynn |
