I wonder if the cold could be effecting the time it takes the ink of the Expo 2 markers to dry? I find that if I try to erase before the ink is dry, it will smear, and is more difficult to remove. I have never used mine in a cold climate, so I was unaware that it could cause this problem. When I read these posts, it just made me wonder.

Regan: I found that out the hard way as well. I weas in a very cold place and I tried to erase the drawing and man did I have a hard time with it. Lesson learned for sure.

Kyle,
Do you think it is possible that the cold changes the properties of the ink until it doesn't dry correctly, hence the smearing, etc?

What I believe is happening is that the board gets cold (I have trouble when it's left in my car in the winter, never really warms well) and it chills the ink on contact - doesn't dry properly.
Answer: keep it in the house, transport it in your front seat instead of the trunk. |

I agree. I think that something goes on bewteen the ink and the plastic when it is in a state of being cold. I am not a scientist so I am not sure really what is exactly going on, but I can tell you that it is not easy at all to try and erase it when it is cold. I learned my lesson the hard way.
Now I transport the board in a case with foam and it keeps it nice and at room temperature without any problems. Like Ross, I also transport it and try to leave it in my vehicle for a short period of time. Kyle

My little thing also broke off the back of the board. You don't actually need it, as you can easily work the eyes with you finger in the groove. I get irritated that staples over her only sell bulk packs of various colors, including just one black. They will no longer special order blak only expo 2's. However, Target do carry their own expo 2 brand which works well.
Steve........I am considering your remote control board. Is it made of similar materials to the hand held one. I do not want to invest $1000 if it is not going to last. http://www.rogerblake.com |

Hi Roger!
We can repair your board with the lever that broke off. The repair current cost is $20 plus shipping and the refurbishing includes new plastic on the front and a new marker. Contact our customer service dept at order@axtell.com to make arrangemnts. We have over 25,000 boards out there performing and we've worked hard to solve many of these issues over the years and will continue to. In fact we're working on more upgrades right now! The remote board is very technical and there are many mechanical parts on it. There are no levers for your fingers on the back, but there is 10 times the linkage and mechanics inside with the servos....plus the electronics involved cause it to need care and gentle handling. We also sell extra black markers and extra front plastic sheets at http://www.axtell.com/illusions.html Ax

I need a replacement plastic for my board. The plastic on my board is turning darker w/ghost outlines of my earlier drawing, causing the kids to yell out that I am tracing when I start to draw.
Ross, did you ever order those vinyl sheets? If you did, how did you get them cut to size? And how is the vinyl working out? How easy is it to replace the plastic? I'd like to get the originals from Axtell, but shipping is $7 for a $10 item. I guess I'm lucky though, cuz the oversea folks pays much more for shipping. |

Your best bet is contacting Axtell for pricing on their "renovation" service - betcha your board is a bit funkier than you think, and if you spent all that to buy it, it might be time for a tune-up - look on it as a cost of doing business.

I've done outside shows where the temp dropped 20 or more degreese and the board was super hard to erase because of the cold.
My magic buddies would have laughed their heads off, if they were watching. I've also had Axtell re-build my boards several times. Well worth the money. When the kids say to you..........the eyes are fake (becuase they see the square areas that are worn. The first time I had to replace the Expo 2 low odor marker, I figured any Expo marker would work. After I drew the picture and tried to erase it......I freaked out becuase the reg. markers wont erase. Don't let em see ya sweat! Lesson learned. Nez

It will be shipped to you already cut and ready for use. Heck, $17 is not a lot of money if you are getting good use out of the prop. In fact, order two sheets and then the shipping is only $3.50 each and you have a spare for the future. Sometimes we worry too much about the nickels and dimes. By the time you order a yard of plastic at $8.50 PLUS shipping (probably $7 -$10), then find someone to cut the plastic for a a few bucks (plus your time to find someone and drive it there to have it done), you are probably paying as much or more that Axtell charges. Quick story, I wanted to purchase a Crystal Silk Casket a few years back. At the time $35. "I can do that cheaper," I said to myself. Well the plastic was easy. I got it cut into pieces of the right size at a local hardward store for about $5. The holographic tape was not available anywhere in the area. I drove to and called a lot of stores. Ended up buying a scrap piece from a sign shop and cutting it into strips the size I needed. I then had to track down someone to cut a piece of metal for (well you know). That cost $5 to have cut and then $15 to have polished. In the end I spent about $30 on materials, another $5 on gas driving around, and about 6 or 7 hours of my time gathering materials and actually making the thing. Hmmmmm.

Scott, I completely understand your point. When shipping is 70% of the cost of an item, my mind starts looking for options first. When there's not too many option or the only other option will bring the cost similar to the original option, then I'll go with the most convenient option and pay a little more for that. Get it? Good? Can you explain to me what I just wrote?
Well, the way I understand it is, to order two sheets from Axtell, pay a little more (cuz of the shipping), but in the end, it's probably the best and most convenient option for me. |

Absolutely not! But that's OK if I didn't understand what you didn't understand what you wrote as long as you understand what you didn't understand what your wrote. Right? . . . Oy, my head hurts. Just send Ax a couple of bucks and be done with it .

Hi guys.... Happy New Year! Make it a great one!
The plastic we use on the board at this time is "High Polished Lexan". The polished side erases best. It's .060" thick cut 14 x 17" for the large board, and 10 x 12" for the small board. Over the years we have used various plastics.... the BEST was "Tri-acetate" but is no longer available from the suppliers in quantities we can justify. If anyone finds it available, please let me know. We'll start using it again. It will erase both the regular Expo and the Expo2 (low odor) markers! Meanwhile we use the Lexan High Polished for the Expo2 only. Sorry about the shipping being 70%....I can't control the cost of the shipping, but.....I could raise the price of the plastic until the shipping is only 20% if you like! ) Or not.... Ax

If your board is showing "ghost" outlines of the character you draw, it not only lookd bad, it spoils the effect too, because the kids will see what you've previously drawn. It's important to keep the plastic clean, and a regular once-over with lighter fluid, or a suitable alcohol, will remove every trace of dry-marker. If the new plastic is non-scratch, I bet it will last for hundreds of performances.

Hi Guys,
I had the same problems you are all talking about. The solution was to go to a craft store and pick up a plastic sheet the kind you would use for an OHP in a meeting, little cost involved and just replace it when required. I have also bought a pen that has a rubber on the end. It looks like a mic, this is good when rubbing small areas out |
