This is like a phantom product. No one seems to have even seen one in person yet, much less be able to review it.

A couple comments about this:
1. I have never seen a post-it note pad that functions like a notepad. Maybe they exist, but it looked odd to me. I think of post-it note pads as not having a "cover" that flips over. 2. The revelation note doesn't look good to me. I think the three words look unusual in their position on the revelation, and the fact that one of the participants has both the revelation and the post-it note list is going to create suspicion about how this was done. I think there are stronger confab routines for stage, and I don't think this one is strong enough for close-up. KJ |

How many magicians does it take to change a lightbulb? Regardless, for magicians darkness is a time for d'lite.

Also you can always place another cover if you wish. Secondly, you DON´T need (obviously) to let the audience with the post it note. However spectators have no clue about how I predicted everything, EVEN if they are left with both papers. Again, if you are worried with that is just a matter of no giving the post it to the audience. If you think this is not strong enough I respect your opinion, but here you don´t hide the pad all the time, like almost all other confabulation effects designed for close-up. I have used Dream Pad professionally for a long time now, and the audience response is absolutely tremendous, so I know what I am talking about here, trust me. |

Joao,
I don't doubt that this has been performed countless times. It's just that it hasn't improved upon one of the biggest problems with a confab routine. They always look awkward when you have a "story" written on a page and then conveniently all the "prediction" words are lined up one above the other. They often look like this: I took a trip to Italy I went on a Train I spent $100 They just don't look natural, and nor does this one. In the note in the performance, the three “prediction” items stand out like a HUGE sore thumb! And, one of the participants is looking at the “post-it” note side by side with the “prediction” note and they would likely see that something doesn’t look right. Lay the prediction "story" page next to the post-it note and tell me honestly if you don't think the story page looks a bit suspicious. Look, I enjoy performing and watching performers. The really good performers leave their audience thinking there is no way that could have been possible. In this case, they may not say anything, but some are going to think in their mind: “I don’t know how he did it, but there was something suspicious about the post-it pad words appearing exactly the same as those same words on the prediction.” Also, I have been guilty of this in my own performances. Fortunately, I have a daughter who watches me perform and she will say: “Dad, that one didn’t look good. You need to change that routine.” I'm sorry for the criticism, but the art needs to continue to advance. KJ |

The above note didn't space my example right. I'm going to add "..." to make the point.

I really enjoy confab routines since I saw Mel Mellers do his tremendous stage routine. It is something I have worked on quite a bit to try to get rid of some of the problems. I have been particularly interested in how to do a good confab routine in a more close-up scenario. After much work, I came up with a confab routine using a storyline along the lines of the Davinci Code or the new movie Inferno. It has a plot with a villain, a crime, etc. The items are written on a small piece of paper, one on top of the other, just as is done with the dream pad. However, when the story is read at the end, the prediction items are scattered throughout the page. One is toward the top left, another middle right, another bottom left. The routine ends with a double kicker. After the story is read, I identify who the hero of the story is (someone from the audience) that they have secretly selected while my back is turned. That person gets to keep the story page as a souvenir.

1KJ,
I totally get what you are saying and I applaud you for trying to move this effect forward and eliminate the areas that could be considered weak spots that possibly allow the audience to backtrack to the method. However, as we all well know, certain things bother some people more than others, and while all of your points are completely valid I also think there is a lot of "thinking like a magician" going on with them as well. I say this because I have performed a confabulation type effect many times that have the issues you mentioned regarding word placement and it has just never been an issue. But you do have to give careful thought as to what you write immediately before the predictions so as not to have obvious spaces as you have indicated. Now I certainly wouldn't give both slips of paper to the same person to compare but I have no problem handing them to different people separated by a little distance. But typically I just keep it and don't give it to anyone. The paper you have written on should be considered an inconsequential memory jogger that plays no important role and hopefully they won't recall you wrtiting anything down at all. I usually perform this similar to "mad-libs" (for those that remember that old party game) and ask for several spectators to call out an answer. Then the funniest or oddest one is usually the one decided upon. It makes sense to write this down as throughout the routine several answers are heard so it is helpful to write down the one we as a group have decided to use. Even though this is promoted as a close-up trick I don't think it's the type of thing you want to do for just 1 or 2 people. It's best for a small group of 4 or more. While many methods have been developed over the years and you could make an argument that this product is unnecessary, I do think there is merit in what Joao Miranda has brought to the table by releasing this. But I do like the idea of scattering the words around on the page and I'm sure many of us have given that some thought over the years. Perhaps you would consider putting out a PDF of your method and handling? |

Videoman,
I completely agree with what you are saying. I also agree that I can be guilty of "thinking like a magician". I live and work close to a NASA facility. Therefore, I perform for all types of people including some real "rocket scientists". I personally like to try to have my magic as tight as possible. I'll also be the first to admit that not every single one of my magic pieces is completely "tight", but I try. I have learned a lot from the likes of Dai Vernon, David Williamson, and others who spend a great deal of time working out the tiniest of details until their magic is as flawless as possible. I think David Williamson is a really good example of someone who appears totally careless in his performance, but who has perfected every detail of what he does. To me, it's like anything in life. If you play golf, but never learned to have a good stance or swing, your golf game is probably never going to be very good. As for putting out a PDF of my handling, I would be happy to do so. My routine uses my own method for the confab handling, but it also uses a commercially available system for one piece of the routine. This system costs several hundred dollars. Send me a PM and I'll give you more info to determine if my routine would be suitable for you. KJ |

Videoman,
One more point. My method would also lend itself to the Mad-libs type presentation, as I have done that as well. With my method, you could write down all the suggestions, then circle the selected one, and the final revelation would still have the desired words in different places on the sheet. Also, I designed this method for close-up. IMO, stage confab doesn't have the same constraints. I think things like double writing are just fine for stage. I use a different method for stage. I would be happy to share that method as well. PM me. KJ |

Got my Dream Pad a few days ago and finally got around to watching the instructional vids (which are top notch and very clear by the way). A very nice and complete kit. I have only had time to watch the videos twice and play with the props but so far, this seems like a very nice release that delivers as advertised. The underlying methodology is an updated version of past confab methods but the handling is much improved. There is no double writing. You can show what you are writing in real time. You write in blue ink and the prediction paper's writing is black. The necessary sleight of hand is quick and easy. Reset is fairly quick but you will likely not be able to do it in front of an audience or walking between tables.
One nice thing that I really like is that you don't need to write out the letter every time you want to perform. You make one master template that you can photocopy as much as you'd like. So your written prediction paper can be made in bulk so it's always ready to go. Again, I haven't tried this in a paid gig yet but from what I've seen thus far, this seems like a workable winner for the real world. I went with the Vision Box for the reveal but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. |
