Too difficult believe me! Sometimes I cannot find what I want.

Frankm6,
Very difficult, however, I have an alphabetized file for all my instructions. I also have boxes with the actual tricks/prop/accessory or whatever inside and each box is labeled, "cards", "coin and money", "mental", etc. As for lecture notes, I went to Wal-Mart and bought the wide plastic magazine holders, and on the outside labeled them "Lecture Notes" and put them in the bookcase alongside my other magic books, which I am currently entering in the computer. A bought scrapbooks and put all my magic ephemera inside them and my "Magic Room" is finally getting a little organization. Rennie

I keep mine in magazine holders, like Rennie, but first I slip them into a comic book bag and backing board. Partially to protect them, but to a large degree to make them all a uniform size and easier to file. For larger publications, you can get "magazine size" bags and boards, too. Very inexpensive at your local comic shop.

Scan them into Microsoft Word using an OCR program. Then convert them to Adobe PDF format and store them on CD.
Instructions should be kept with the trick in a plastic bag. Get the bags from Office Depot. Never have a trick you are not using without the instructions enclosed. This serves several purposes. |

Gordon,
Great idea about the bag protector and the cardboard. I have some of the bags that I actually purchased at a comic book store for other papers, but will use it for the notes along with the cardboard. Many good ideas come from this forum.By the way I see you are from Silicon Valley, what part are you from? Rennie

Lecture notes and manuscripts I keep in the bookcase along with my magic books. I have them organized either by type (cards, coins, mentalism) or by author if they are of a variety of material.
Tricks I keep in one of those metal multi drawer cabinets (got mine from Container Store), which I have actually outgrown and so also keep them in plastic drawer cabinets (also from Container Store - and cheaper than the metal ones). These drawers are also organized by type of effects. I try to keep the instructions with the effects, unless they are in my current repertoire. Sandy |

I have my instructions in a five-inch three ring binder. They are all in one locations. Some of them I have duplicated and stored them in appropriate sections. (Appearing Cane and Vanishing Cane are in the "A", "V" and a copy in in my wand "W" section with a note referencing similar items.
I have hot glue bound lecture notes into a binder (Staples) and heated the glue on my electric stove. All Steve Taylor's notes fit into two binders, one with magic the other with his ventriloquism notes.. I've done this with my illusion plans, glued them into plastic cover binders. All my video tapes are classified by entertainer and subject. David Ginn, Samuel Smith, BJ Hickman, and Steve Taylor (and others) are all together in kid show performances and this takes several shelves. My DVD are together (Converting all VHS to DVDs). Mark Wilson's 15 tapes all together My Books are similar to the tapes, they are by topic, Illusions, Kids Shows, Marketing, and Fundraisers are my major topics. All items are on 3x5 cards in a file cabinet, for quick reference, with duplications like the instruction books so I can find them easily. Now for the effects and tricks, I can't find them because they are scattered in so many locations, big illusions are in trailer and shed, illusionettes in trailer, and house, and everything else in clear storage boxes labeled Comedy Props, Fire, Cards, Balloons, Flowers, Silks, Wands, Milk Pitcher, Repair, Batteries, Zombie (Silks, gimmicks, and balls). Don't have room for puppets, and larger stuff so they are everywhere frustrating my wife! I am still organizing.

I have always used three ring binders for organizing copies of articles I find that interest me in magazines. Did you ever try to sort through years of magazines?
I am still working on organizing everything else. I have heard of guys using filemaker pro as you can put a picture with the description. Leo Benke (who organized much of Copperfiled's collection) wrote a book on organizing and caring archivally for a book collection.

Since I just started I don't have a lot of stuff to store, but I keep things for my thread work in one drawer, all my card stuff in the drawer underneath, and all my DVDs are beside the computer ready to be popped in.

Speaking of magazines, what I'm doing these days is tearing out the pages that I'm interested in keeping and filing them in folders. For years I kept the entire magazine, but it became too much of a burden. Not just space-wise, but also it was difficult to find what I was looking for.
This works well for me, but you do have to be pretty sure of your tastes and interests. That is, confident that what you discard is not something you'll regret in the future. |

Gordon,
Only problem is I do not like to destroy anything related to magic. Also a lot of the mags become collectibles later. Rennie

I have had my magic book collection in a computer database for over 15 years! I now use Filemaker Pro (available for Mac (what I use) and Windows as well. The ONLY way to keep up with the over 1,000 books I have. I have considered doing the same with my props and instructions. The database allows for a photo field - so I could keep track of what the props look like as well as other pertinent data needed.
I have instructions in binders---at least 10 different categories---and that has served me well for years. I actually can locate the relevant instructions. |

Three-ring binders.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

I keep a copy of the instructions in plastic bags with the tricks. And keep the orginal instructions of the trick in a three-ring binder. Just in case.
