Doesn't address the issue if you get a mix of old and new, but quarter shells are pretty cheap. Have one of each on-hand and ring in the right one?

As long as you don't hold the quarters under their nose after you collect the quarters from everyone and THEN ring in the shell you should be fine. Billy McComb did his linking finger ring with that principle. Not everybody is seeing/ looking at, everyone elses coins or in his case rings.
