The jury of public opinion may be divided, but Dylan has some impressive literary types on his side like Salman Rushdie, Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Morrison... that is, aside from the judges' opinion. I love the old 50's rock and roll love songs, but Dylan's lyrics did stand apart from the past, eg. "the ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face" (from Visions of Johanna)! Now, can lyrics be considered literature? Poetry anthologies often include lyrics from very old ballads, which have survived centuries of even change in language. Some of Dylan's lyrics have survived with relevance, for a half century!!! Lynn

Dylan is not my cup of tea, but I do know a complete artist when I see, hear, and listen to one, and he is a complete artist. Is poetry literature? Are some lyrics poetry? I am very humbled and glad to see a fellow artist (not putting myself anywhere close to his level) succeed. Maybe if we all utilized our art for the better of humanity instead of our pockets our world would be a better place.

IMO, Dylan wrote some great songs, but they make lousy poetry.

Obama wins the Peace Prize before doing anything. Dylan wins the prize for literature. What's next? Bill Nye for Chemistry in 2017?

Well, this is very interesting. I have to say I agree with all points of view here:
1)Bob1Dog- Yes! Absolutely- Dylan has written some great music! 2)Magnus- I wondered if we would ever agree but I do agree with you on this. 3)tommy- I am quite baffled by the amount of people that I run into to which their literacy level, after receiving a High School diploma, is not near where it should be after obtaining a High School Diploma. Our education system in a lot of places here in America is suffering tremendously. This is very sad and concerning to me. I must say I to believe the prestige the Noble Peace prize used to hold has been on a steady decline. RNK

What is hilarious are the sour grapes comments I hear from artists who feel they may have been overlooked (boo hoo)! Lynn |

I think it is a decision designed to get them good press, and it belittled the Nobel prize. No disrespect to Dylan, but he is not a major literary figure. Sure, some of his lyrics can be viewed as poetry. But some are pure doggerel. And what has he written in the past two decades?
A sad day for those of us who love literature. Irvine Welsh put it very well: “I’m a Dylan fan, but this is an ill conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies.”

Nobody reads these days. That is why they gave the prize to Dylan because they didn’t know any authors. Today they only know entertainers and so Pop will soon be leading the free world and getting the prize for discovering magnetic water.

On the positive side, it opens discussion of a more expansive notion of literature. First songwriters, next will be comic book authors, manga writers, video game programmers. Maybe screenwriters and meme generators will be part of the conversation too.

Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the utmost possible degree. [Ezra Pound, "ABC of Reading"]
Anyhow, it is the job of the artist to tell a story, no matter how simple that story may be and no matter what art form it is, innit? Magic is akin to Lewis Carroll nonsense literature, as magicians essentially tell absurd stories and prove them apparently true. Magic nonsense does not lake meaning but often is derived from an excess of meaning. I know a magician who will make you a pair specs, with which you will not only be able read with but with which you will also be able to see the future. Mind you they say that chicken guts are hard to read and invite flights of fancy or corruption.

I think Salman Rushdie put it well...."From Orpheus to Faiz, song and poetry have been closely linked. Dylan is the brilliant inheritor of the bardic tradition. Great choice." But I think Kate Tempest put it best.... "Let the lyrics speak for themselves." Lynn

I don't think lyrics speak for themselves. They are integrally bound to music. It's a different art form.

Songs are poetry.
Poetry is literature. What's your problem ?
