I am pretty sure the Janet box was created by Franz Harary for Janet Jackson. If I'm wrong, Please correct me.
I would like to know how it was integrated into her show? As well as which tour this was on? Was it actually performed by her? Was she singing while it was done to someone else? Was it as a between songs interlude? Is it captured on film somewhere? Thanks for the help! |

Hi Lance... here's the deal about the illusion.. first.. where did you hear it called the "Janet Box?" That was an early name for it, along with the "Caterpillar Illusion." Well as far as I know the illusion was designed around the time Franz was developing illusions for Janet's tour, around 1988. She never performed the illusion, she wouldn't be the right size for it.
Funny you should ask... I could have asked him myself... he was at my house last Friday... no joke... check my site! Steve Chezaday.com |

Steve,
I'm not really sure where I heard the name "The Janet Box", but I have heard more than one person refer to it as such. What did he design for that tour? |

Franz still refers to the "Slicer" as Janet Box to this day. It originally was pink and had a picture of a girl on the front that very much resembled Janet Jackson.
I believe he did some version of a lions bride for Janet. Erich Troudt |

The slicer or janet Box was designed by Franz, and is built by David Mendoza. Copperfield, Steve Wyrick, and a few others have or currently perform it.
Girl gets in a vertical box. The box then pivots up into a horizontal position. Blades are dropped into the box. The box is then pulled apart into 9 small boxes. The prop is then restored, blades removed, girls returns. |

Is the the one that Wayne Dobson did on his television special where he went into it. Franz did it on the British TV show "The Best of Magic" in the 1980's.
Its a great illusion Regards, TM |

David Mendoza made one a few years ago that looked it was on steroids. Very industrial look. He, also, had a refurbished one that was nice.
I like the Copperfield version with Joanie Spina the best. Downside is all those blades to contend with. It, also, falls IMHO in to the "Puzzle" type of illusion. You know she is in there, but what position is she contorted in to. Gary Ouellet always felt that the Puzzle-type illusions were the weakest. I am not so sure. I will admit my "Tubed Out" never gets the gasps that say a Modern Art gets. |
