My brief review of Quintet in C Minor :
TCHOLADT – Is a test conditions Living and Dead test, with a devious method that once practiced gives you a skill which could be applied to many effects, my only personal concern with this and other living dead tests is it feels anti climatic, for me the perfect ending would be to reveal the name, but Jes justifies his reasons for not adding this to the routine. It was an odd feeling to read through the routine with questions in my mind that were then answered as I continued to read, like you read my mind . This would work very well for a publicity stunt under complete test conditions, but not something I would use in normal performances as you would have your own envelopes and billets, the fore I would use a more standard method already prepared. Common Sense – Spectator as a mind reader great presentation of the fingertips great scripting throughout this booklet I will definitely take something away from this in terms of scripting and presentation idea, in the right situation this could play very well. Death and the maiden – Again a super scripted performance piece with a simple method, which is a great example of how a story sells an effect over the method, I am sure readers would have their preferred method for accomplishing the effect but it’s the presentation that is the real hook here, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable talking about death with my participants but the idea of two lovers is much more appropriate for me as suggested by Jes. This is an effect that uses tarot cards something that I haven’t done but If I did it maybe in this style. Iam glad to see Ian Rowlands ‘Something Inside’ is referenced because that was also the effect that popped into my mind reading this and a reminder of how powerful one to one performances can be with an individual A challenge Tarot Test - This again is a great presentation for a simple effect of revealing a thought of celebrity/name for someone who uses or is familiar with the tarot deck Water to vinegar – Russian roulette style of effect with water and vinegar, a clever method, I think that this is one of those effects that you have to go out and try to appreciate the effectiveness of this, I loved when Derren brown did a pseudo hypnosis performance with the girl drinking vinegar and this method would allow you do this and would be my preferred use for this which Jes mentions is his additional ideas and thought. At the end of each effect there is a section of additional ideas and thoughts, which is a nice idea and shows that these have been used in the real world and thought has gone into alternatives presentations and usages of methods. This is written in an articulate way and enjoyed reading the presentations, iam not a bizarre type performer but that did not stop me thinking about the ideas and methods in this booklet. |

Some time ago I was given a copy of ‘Quintet in C-minor’ [Or K.406 for short*] to review
I have put this review off a bit. I would have liked to have tried some of the routines out first, otherwise all I am doing is reviewing how I think the effects may work… and the manner they are ‘taught’ I also thought about not doing the review – as I didn’t want it to seem like I was giving something [I hadn’t tried] a bad review But I did promise to be honest, and I did promise to review the item. So for now this is here. If the author [or others] think it comes across as mean, unfair, or unhelpful – I may well take this post down. And warning it is long, and for those of you who love reading ‘bad reviews’ – I actually think the routines are good [though most don’t fit my persona] A review of Quintet in C Minor by Jes Hensen Disclaimer 1: I received a free copy for this review. Before I got it I did say that I would give an honest review [good or bad] – and after I said that, it was sent to me for review. I don’t know Jes, or Amira and have never met either of them. Disclaimer 2: I’m very new to magic. But have made a career from performing [stage/screen/solo theatre tours] – so I have stage craft, a voice, audience management skills and a thirst for magic. I’m retired [from work] and perform [magic] mostly at weekly gatherings. In performance I use a lot of humour and push most tricks into a mentalism type feel. I am very much a beginner when it comes to sleights etc. Quintet in C Minor is £15 from https://quintetincminor.blogspot.co.uk/ Starting off with the ad copy. “Jes Hansen’s very original ideas and thoughts on the art of reading minds. A strong focus on easy to do methods which allow a maximum of freedom on the performance side of the routines. Well-structured with written out full performances and lots of additional ideas and applications for the original methods and principles. In it you will find five routines suited for stage, close-up and readings that have the power to make people believe. The routines are supplemented by a short essay on how to perform as a psychic without claiming to be one.” I think all my problems with this product are superficial – in that it’s all about how it’s presented The photo of the ‘cover’ makes it look like a very nice and professionally organised pdf What you actually get has some easily corrected ‘bad decisions’ The whole pdf is printed to ‘look like’ it’s printed on some sort of parchment type paper, with a few splodges and spots. What it actually looks like is very grey background colour. I hate pdf’s and print off copies of everything to read. Luckily I don’t pay for printouts [or ink] – but it must cost a lot more to print out so much ‘grey’ rather than simple white background. Next up the titles. Thank goodness the actual text is all in a sensible font. But every title and header is in an awful font – that makes it tough [annoying] to read And why would you release it without page numbers? Crazy. As I said all easy to fix. All amateur mistakes. I wouldn’t hand something in with a tough to read font for titles, high cost to print out, and no page numbers – even as a first draft [I should have said I did spend a number of years in publishing] Although that all seems rather negative. In reality these are just annoyances and shouldn't detract if the product itself is good. And I will get onto the product, in a bit. Next up is the actual text. There are a lot of spelling mistakes and wrong words used. All the way through. It doesn’t seem to have been proof read very well. I guess that Jes is not English [German?] and so if he hasn’t got someone fluent speaking [and good at proof reading] to help – this is the inevitable end result. So far we have: pages coloured grey, no page numbers, bad choice of font, spelling mistakes and wrong words used through out I think the rest of the review is about the positives. And as you can see [and I said] all of the negatives are superficial Annoying, but superficial I just remembered another annoying thing… there needed to be more paragraphs. Sometimes the great wall of text, could of [and should of] been broken up more to make it ‘read’ better And just to make clear that everything I have mentioned [as negatives] have all been superficial issues – even though often a wrong word has been used [along with misspelt words] – there was no point where the meaning was not clear to me. It was never so severe as to blur what was being communicated. In fact the title font was much harder to decipher than when weird words were put in to the main body of text. It would take a few hours to fix these issues and the PDF would seem so much more professional. Now moving on to what routines you actually get Five [quintet] routines ROUTINE ONE: TCHOLADT This one was of most interest to me. The method is brilliant. He does ask if anyone has read about this method before to let him know – as he can’t believe he is the first to think of it. I do have to say that I have ‘sort of’ used this method for a while On Richard Osterlind’s Corinda DVDs – he suggests doing something [the specs won’t notice] that will secretly mark which selection is the one we want to track. I don’t want to say too much to not tip what item/method we are talking about Anyway, I got the five items I was going to use when I noticed I didn’t have to do anything to secretly mark the ‘special one’ – I could already tell So I have used this method before reading it here BUT Jes has gone one further – in using this method to know exactly where all selections are. I didn’t even think of this [obvious though it is now – Jes has done the ‘hard obvious’ thinking for me] So I was very interested in this. And I think it’s a great idea. I doubt I would be as bold as Jes suggests He suggests getting the specs to bring all the items – in such a way that the performer never touches any of them Although this is amazing [for other performers] – I’m not sure how much more amazing it is to a layman The real problems [I think are] – if you are doing bigger gigs – are you really going to ask specs to bring these items with them [?] If you did – it would feel ‘set up’ to people who were not involved in the bringing of supplies. So this turns it from stage work – to parlour work for friends and family As I said I’m not sure it adds enough to warrant the complete hands off approach. Especially as it is bold – to be able to in real time work out the ‘secret’ to track each selection And a final thought… as I said [via Corinda and Osterlind] I already use this method but just to track the ‘special one’ and not all selections. There was something I found out, which then makes Jes suggestion that the audience provide all components even more bold [risky]… it only works if they bring cheaper components. I have to say the vast majority of this item sold are of the cheaper variety. I had access to some but from a posh office – and the supplies were unusable for this effect as at the higher end of the market you will not be able to find any secret something to track items. So if you don’t provide the item – it can fail. Anyway – I do love the idea [though I will be using my own supplies] and will use this somehow in the future [to track more than one item] – it is a very good idea. And if you haven’t used something like this before – then definitely this could be a winner [whether used in this routine or one of your own] ROUTINE TWO: Common Sense Not my sort of thing. I like stuff that works. I hate experimental [bold] stuff. I get it loads of mentalist love doing stuff that is ‘real’. I spend my whole act making it seem like it’s real – I don’t need to do real things to be believable. But if I were to do something bold/risky/real – I want it wrapped around a routine that I know has a kicker that works 100% of the time. That is not this routine, so this is routine is not for me. If you are interested in this sort of high wire routine – then this one is simple to perform, easy for an audience to understand, both easy and well presented. So I’m definitely not saying it’s a bad routine – it’s just not for me. ROUTINE THREE: Death and the maiden This is a super simple ‘trick’ but the take away [for the reader] should be about how it’s the ‘singer’ not the ‘song’ – by that I mean Jes has created a story/presentation that is more than the sum of the parts of the trick. So as a reader it is a good lesson in looking what you can add to an effect. Obviously the next lesson would be what you can take away [cut] from an effect. As many times more is not better. But in the first part – giving a good story / setting makes a simple effect soar and have a much bigger effect on the specs. This again is not an effect I will try out. And I think Jes himself suggests it’s not for real performances [shows] but more for quieter [one on one] moments. ROUTINE FOUR: A challenge Tarot Test I didn’t quite get the point to this [at first] As an effect is explained… then the author tells you the method… the method is, err… well you need to get the info from the spec beforehand. What? So you need to !@#$e or get a p**k Now I do get this routine. Again, like Routine Three what you are buying is the idea for the presentation. A new way to use the info you are ‘ahead’ of the spec on. I think there is nothing stronger than having a more interesting story or way to present an effect. Everybody can have a routine where they get a billet, have a p**k, and then say ‘think of what you wrote… err I’m getting something, are you thinking of David Bowie?’ But if you can present it differently – it lifts it off the page more, and there’s more chance the spec will forget they wrote anything down in the first place. With the caveat that you need to be careful that you aren’t adding layers and words that simply elongate an effect and make it less impactful. A delicate tight rope Finally ROUTINE 5: Water to vinegar Russian roulette with water and vinegar Again not a routine I would do – but yet again it’s a good idea, and will work well. So to sum up: I didn’t like the presentation of the PDF I thought the five routines contained showed some inspired thinking and are definitely worth getting if any of these effects are something you think would fit your stage persona And of them the idea to track five items [from the first routine] is definitely something I intend on using in the future * that’s a reference for any Mozart fans |

Hello Duster,
first I would like to thank you for your honest review and the ideas of improvment. I will try to comment/ answer your points of critique in the order they appeared in your post. Maybe I can bring some light in the dark! The layout, font and language where your main points of criticism. 1. The Layout I understand and accept your criticism very well! My new release already has a white background and less text in a block. The point of the page numbers is also justified. I won't make the mistake again aswell as other mistakes that I mostly made because of a lack experience. So I'm very grateful to get these things pointed out! 2. The Font The Font is something that was not only criticised by you. It is far better to read when it is larger, in the way I used it, it is a bit hard to read. I think it is still possible to decipher it but I wont make this mistake again. 3. The Language This is something I can't judge well so I believe you. You where the first one who pointed this out, the other native speakers who reviewed it before the release haven't informed me about wrong words or language errors in general. For I am German it is copletely possible that I made mistakes and Im happy that they don't made it hard for you to understand my routines. I got it proof read but I think I should change my proofreader for the next releases. If you still have questions or don't understand something just message me I will always anser asap! So now after the "annoying" things to the actual content! That the routines don't fit your persoa is something I understand as I was in the same situation often before! (I think we all where at some point.) The routines are, as pointed out in the ad copy, for psychic entertainers and mentalists with a more serious or dark approach (though I think that there are ideas for every mentalist in there). If you are not one of the former the scripts won't be that useful for you aswell as the premises. These two elements (script and premises) are very important to me and one of the main elements of my ebook so I can see why you didn't find as much as you would have liked to find for your use. You stated that you are new to magic - I congratulate to your choice ;-) As you possibly read in my book I come from the backgorund of the theater where I worked as an actor. This is soemthing that influenced my path in mentalism from the beginning. I think that your performance situation differ very much from mine and for that I see again why some of my ideas where not as useful to you than to other performers. I work in very special performance situations that are sometimes beyond the perfomance situations a magician or mentalist would find himself in. I do a lot of readings (where the two Tarot routines come from) and also ghost hunting and spooky after dinner entertainment. TCHOLADT It's great to hear that you liked my thougts on the method and think about using it in the future. Also I believe that the variations by osterlind and corinda you describe can be thought of as a base. The way I used it and and made it possible to track multiple items is soemthing that goes far beyond what they created and the basic idea the method is based on. The point of borrowing everything is not to make it more amazing but to be able to give a performance under test conditions. This is something that is more relevant for psychic performers that other but great for the 'special' thing for example at a radio station.. This is not the routine to make other techniques for the living and dead test obsolete, it is soemthing for the special moment where you have to go the extra mile! COMMON SENSE That you are not intrested in performing something like this is of course perfectly fine. This is again soemthing for my performance situations. At psychic evenings it is soemthing that works great. For smaller stage performances you can try it too and wont be disapointet! This is not for magic performances and not for mental magic! Its psychic entertainemt and bold! DEATH AND THE MAIDEN This is pure script and performance! The method is something you will maybe adjust to your preferences but still it is a pure worker. This routine is for one on one and I would strongly recommend you to give it a chance. This is something I do at reading s or with a booker and it facinates lay people while magician tend to oversee the beauty of the routine. A CHALLENGE TAROT TEST This is for the readers! So it wont fit very well in standard performances of magic. It is far more than the peek (the peek is soemthing that is choreographed very tight and I is much more than just 'use your favourite method' as well). There is nothing I do that got me booked more as a reader than this! In these performance situations it is not about streamlined effects and also not about method it is just a 'real' performance that give a credible impression to the audience. WATER TO VINEGAR I am astounded that you wrote so little about this routine because I think it is the routine that would most appeal to mentalists and mental magicians in general. I would recommend with this aswellto try it. It is simple but beautiful in terms of method. Just try it! My routines are not trying to produce a firework of reveals but an intelligent performance! The scripting and ways of performing standard plots is something I'm caring about most (This - I believe- comes mostly from my acting background) To sum it up: Thank you again for your honest review. I hope that you give one or two things a try anyway to convince you that they are workers! I believe in my material and see that it is not for everyone. But for everyone who identifies with the 'darker' side of mentalism there is plenty of stuff in the ebook. If you have any questions regarding the routines or other themes just ask me here or write me a PM! Best regards, Jes

On Nov 14, 2016, JesHansen wrote: Few quick points POINT ONE It's ironic that the above sentence also has 'where' rather than 'were' - which is the type of mistake that is throughout the PDF I do want to be clear - all my negative points [like the above one] are tiny, purely cosmetic. As [like in the PDF] it's easy to understand what you have written. POINT TWO I hope it came across that I thought the actual effects and ideas were good – as I said all my negatives were just superficial things [and not about your methods] POINT THREE Maybe I was a bit tired/rushed by the time I got to the last item POINT FOUR I actually got more out of your work then several ‘famous’ Mentalist works that cost $100+ when they came out… I don’t want to get bogged down in that too much; I have bigger fish to fry POINT FIVE Jes has asked me to take a tiny bit out of my review – and it is NOT any of the negative points, but something that might tip the method [I tried not to tip any method] – and I thought the request was fair and tried to cut the text. Alas after comments you can no longer edit posts. Unless anyone can tell me how to do this, I currently can’t make any edit And to stress again, 1. Jes did NOT ask for any of the negatives to be taken out 2. I only think the presentation of the PDF is a little less than professional 3. I think the ideas are good and if they fit your act – I would recommend buying it straight away Thanks |

Here is another reveiw I didn't want to withhold! It is from Kris Whip who isn't active here in the Café!
"I was recently asked to read and review a book called Quintet In C Minor by Jes Hansen. This the first release to the public by Jes Hansen and is very well put together, the layout is very nice and all the routines in it are well thought out. Jes says in the book that he didn't come into mentalism by the route most taken, his background was in theater, so they aren't any knuckle busting sleights, just routines that have nice and well written presentations. The first routine in the book is called Tcholadt and is a Living Dead Test in which everything needed can be borrowed and the performer never has to touch anything before or during the performance. The method is not self working, but is easy to perform with a bit of practice, and I personally had fun performing the routine and will be performing it this Halloween if giving the chance. Next up is a spectator as mind reader effect called Common Sense, when you read the method do not be put off by it as it is a very good effect and plays just as well to a small crowd as it would to a big crowd, and will really test your showmanship. It is my favourite effect from the book due to these reasons and because I am a big fan of psychic style effects, it this one is so wonderfully structured and scripted. Death and The Maiden is the next routine and uses a deck of Tarot Cards, it is more for intimate performances, probably more suited to female spectators. The routine is self working but don't let that put you off as it allows you to concentrate on the performance and it plays big, it is especially good for those of us who enjoy giving readings much in the way that psychics do. A Challenge Tarot Test is another routine that employs a Tarot Deck, there is no scripting for this routine and the reader is encouraged to create his/her own script, which won't please people new to mentalism but anyone that has experience with scripting routines will have no problems. Water to Vinegar is Jes's take on the Russian Roulette plot with five shot glasses, four with water and one with vinegar. The method is bold but fairly simple, it is scripted in a way that makes it about more than just luck, and Jes has a lot of experience in the various presentations and methods of Russian Roulette routines, and you can see he has really taken his time structuring this one. Overall the book is aimed at those among us that like to perform in the style of a psychic, but don't let that put you off as you will find something in this book that you will perform, the routines are well thought out and you can see that Jes has taken his time with getting the routines right where he wanted them before publishing."

Hello guys!
I had the chance to read Quintet in C Minor by Jes Hansen. This is my concise review about this manuscript. * TCHOLADT - Living and Dead Test Ingenious take on the 'Living and Dead' classic effect. I really like the methodology that Jes explains - it’s very original from what I have read before; the performance is inspiring as well. * My approach to Mentalism (Essay) This is a short essay with Jes's personal approach to mentalism. I totally respect his point of view and found this pretty much worth reading. * Common Sense I wasn't particularly fond of this routine as it's not something I would consider doing. Sure, the concept is cool but I feel that it lacks proper execution to be a show-stopper. * Death and the Maiden This is a very nice effect, while the method is fairly simple, I simply love the fact that Jes has incorporated some beautiful storytelling in here. Highly recommended if you're into the Bizarre aspect of Mentalism; this will suit very well all kinds of intimate performances. PS: if you read Intimum Sacrarium, the "Nox Arcana" effect perfectly integrates in here and you will be able to do this effect with a very hard hitting finale as the procedure explained in the book is really clean. * A Challenge Tarot Test This is Jes's personal handling of a Bob Cassidy routine. It seems to be very well explained but not my type of effect. * Water to Vinegar While not as impromptu (or dangerous) as the traditional "Spike" effect, this is a very satisfying solution to a classic mentalism plot which a lot of us enjoy. Very exciting concept in here - definitely got me thinking that a lot more ideas could be possible with the principle that Jes explains herein. I definitely enjoyed this manuscript and look forward to more of Jes's releases. Kind regards, Andreu. |

Just to let you know that Jes and myself have been working very hard over the past 48 hours to remedy the concerns about the spelling and grammar in the original PDF. It seemed such a shame to have the wonderful thinking displayed within the PDF sidelined due to English no been Jes' first language. So we now have a new very much improved (in terms of language) PDF of Quintet in C-Minor available! The link is still the same: http://www.readerofminds.co.uk/quintet_in_c-minor_88.html
As noted above, the thinking and routining here is very good indeed, and now hopefully the spelling will no longer detract from that!
