A pass will fool the most discerning spectator in the room. It's not a stretch for a layman of average intelligence to assume his/her card is on top or bottom if it was in the middle before the deck was cut. Any time a layman has shown me his "trick" and it involves controlling a card, he will invarably mark the spot (jamming a thumb in as a break/failing to even remotely square the cards) and cut once to get the card to the top or bottom, so I would avoid using the same method, albeit more smooth. Might as well do a jog or riffle shuffle after breaking the pack at spectator's card.
However, I believe a triple cut to the table is one of the most disarming controls if you want to keep it simple. |

This isn't a ****ing contest. I don't have to have a good pass to know what a bad control looks like.
And to contribute to the topic-- Cutting when they're not looking is fine, until it's not. Know your context. You ALWAYS want to play up any sense of movelessness. But that's just not possible when your whole technique is based on hoping they don't notice your blatant, unrefined actions. |

They are two different controls the pass is a stealth move , the other is not and is used for different effects.
