My 2 cents...
It is NOT about the "trick" it never is, period. It is about the presentation. It is about the performer. The more simplicity involved in the "trick" allows the performer to be entertaining and if the performer is entertaining, the "trick" is unimportant, for the most part. If the performer sucks, the "trick" is going to suck regardless. I ONLY perform extremely EASY tricks. However, I routine them in such a way that before one is over another has begun. I use a boat-load of comedy in my act and my audiences can care less about the "tricks" because they are enjoying "The Show" This routine is likely going to become my Closer. It will replace the Bill in Lemon that I used for the past 16 years. Why? Because I am able to milk this for more comedy. Bottom line, remember this "A magician is just an actor playing the part of a magician". There is no such thing as a real magician. In all honesty, a magician is really just a salesman. If you can't sell an effect that you're performing, you're going to starve or be a hack. Sadly, there are too many hacks. The beauty in this effect is that it allows you to sell "yourself" because you don't have to worry about messing up a difficult move or worry about anything other than presentation. |

I really like this, and it fits perfectly with a corporate leadership event I have in March. The colours are ideal for the event, and I can modify the contents accordingly. The extra ideas contained on the DVD are excellent, and open up many possibilities for so many different occasions. I highly recommend this and do not underestimate what you can do with this.
Great job. Best wishes Todd |

I'm doing this with 5 Zenner cards and I allow the spectator to remove 1 card and place the other four in the envelopes face down and then after they deal - the envelope that they deal me matches the face down card that's been on the table the entire time. Doesn't get any stronger than that.

Superb suggestion David and great review.
Volition has got to be one of the best value for money effects of 2016 and most versatile principles offered to the magic/mentalism community in a long while. Keep your eyes peeled for a few more Steve Cook gems, as well as a DVD of some top notch bits of business, early 2017. Paul Mc.

On Dec 29, 2016, caigy wrote: I understand this ‘effect’ is Steve Cook’s But please don’t under estimate the value Peter Nardi brings to this package First off, disclaimers – I worked out exactly how this effect ‘works’. I was rather confused [as I don’t have much experience as a magician] that others were asking certain questions, in this thread. I understood the answers given were from what the spec perceives to be the case – yet the people asking questions didn’t seem to get that. I was accused of being wrong about this method by some in this thread – but I was 100% spot on. I held back on buying this, even though it is an effect that I felt I wanted to perform - and so was interested to see what extra advice and ideas were given. I held off but luckily some disgruntled lamb offered to sell his [as he was angry at how ‘bad’/obvious to specs the product was] - so I got it as new and for almost half price. Bargain. I liked the effect anyway. My strength is performance [not in a magical way] – as I have decades of experience in that. But I am new to magic. So although some of Peter Nardi’s tips may be ‘old’ news to more experienced magicians – I found some of his ‘handling’ ideas as being easily worth the [full] admission price. I did enjoy how his side kick [David Loosley] shuffled the envelopes and each time opened them up to make it very easy to see where everything was… if only all specs were that helpful. But the part that got my brain racing and made me very excited to perform this effect, was a later handling. I don’t want to give it away, as you will need to buy the DVD for that. It’s the one where a spec will shuffle the cards first, then they get 'randomly' loaded, then the envelopes get shuffled, and 'randomly' dealt out. Ok laypeople – let’s see you back track all of that. I didn’t think my eyes would notice what it needed to [watch the DVD]… but it really does work. I'm sure this is a simple thing magicans all know about - but I'm not as sharpie as some of you So like I said I am very happy with this. And I know I got it cheaper – but it is definitely worth the actual price, but only if you think this is the sort of effect you want to perform. I’m excited to do so now. I just need to work out my own patter and pitch/script… and an interesting reveal. My main point being… yes Steve Cook brought out the Volition concept*, and it is good [but I felt a little too easy to see through] – then with the extra Nardi treatment, this is one fine effect. * though Osterlind and Corinda have used similar [but less obvious] principles |

Someone asked earlier whether this could be used for any presentations outside of Bank Night effects. I like the simplicity of Colin McLeod's chair test on his Opening Minds DVD but didn't really like the way the envelopes are handled and distributed. Volition completely eradicates this problem. There is a small compromise with the final reveal of the contents of the envelope but with a bit of thought this can be easily overcome.

I really like this. The bonus idea with the ESP cards in which the participant freely places the cards in any of the envelopes then mixes them before the routine really adds some nice layers to the "simple" method. With that said, I personally do not think that ESP cards are the right prop for this kind of fun effect. I really wanted to stick with the bank night routine, so in my handling I place a 5th prize money envelope on the table, then have the participant freely place the 4 cards face down in the envelopes without revealing what they say yet, just indicating that one card is the clear winner for the prize. The rest of the cards have the same words that Steve used in his original routine. That way you still get the same routine, yet lets the participant place the cards in the envelopes themselves and works around the money in the envelope concern. It's been going over great so far.

Hello,
if you can and without anyone tipping the method to me, I'd have one question: if I lose/tear/ruin the envelopes that come with the package, can I just go to a stationery shop, buy any four coloured envelopes and immediately perform the trick or do I need to "work" |them somehow? thanks Mark |

I rather like the simplicity of this one. And that also means that you can adapt the idea to create new presentations etc. You can read my full review here: http://www.bicycle-cards.co.uk/2017/01/1......-review/

This has got to be one of the worst effects I have purchased in a while. I don't see where people that gave this a glowing review are coming from. This is the second time I have bought a Steve Cook effect and been unhappy (Symbol being the first). I don't think I will be buying anything else with Steve Cook's name attached to it. PM me if you want more specifics on why this is so bad IMHO.

I believe part of the disappointment felt by some for many of these effects (not necessarily this one) is due to the demos by Peter Nardi and Dave Loosley. They always "just happen" to do the best case scenario. Now some may argue that with effects such as Symbol and Die-abolical there is no best case, but I would disagree.
BTW, I sold my copy of Volition the day after I got it. Just not my cup of tea. |

After reading several reviews, I finally bought this.
I like the presentation and the potentials that this trick can give. However, I'm thinking David Loosley has been very kind the whole time. Real audience doesn't. I am cracking my brain on how to control and identify the envelopes. |

By the way, I give 10 out of 10 for Symbol by Steve Cook. I have used, I am using and I will use it. Awesome. Symbol is my motivation to buy Volition also.
