I'd be interested to know what backdrops and lighting different people use for the classic dancing hank.

I think the backdrop depends on the method used. I have seen plain backdrops, glitter curtains, and black backdrops.

Dsilverfield,
There is a new version coming out. I do not have this but from previous threads on this, owners only have good things to say about it. They also advise you get both parts for the full routine. illusions & reality, Which version are you asking about? Blackstone's or Ralph Adams? |

Thanks for the response wmhegbil,
I am talking about the Ultimate Dancing Hank. It's on Hank Lee's site and on many others too. Can you tell whose version is coming out and when? |

There is not a backdrop requirement for the version you are speaking of. This is an electronic version of Don Wayne Dancing Hank. Plus you can do other effects. I suggest you invest in the video ($29.95) and see if this is something you would want to invest that amount of money in. This effect is really a 3 part routine that will cost in the end over $1000.00, Animation Sensation, Impossible Hank and Ultimate Dancing Hank.
This is electronics and when they wear out will you be able to get it fixed. Then while it is being fixed what will you substitute in your act? These are considerations if you do many shows. So can you afford to buy 2 if it is a major feature in your act? If you do purchase it, let us know how you are using it and your thoughts on this effect. |

Sean Bogunia (the creator) was at PCAM last summer and I saw him perform the full routine in the professional evening show. He also demo'd The Impossible Hank at the dealer show.
It is a really great effect, but one which would take a lot of work to present effectively. Choreography synched to music is pretty much a necessity. I have seen another performer use pretty much the full act in a small stage show at an amusement park a couple years ago. It looked very good. Animation Sensation and Impossible Hank have no special lighting or backdrop needs. Parts of the Ultimate Dancing Hank routine are probably a bit more restrictive. Bill is right; buying the $30 demo video is probably a good idea. All of the secrets are explained on the video, so you can make an informed decision as to whether this is something you can use. |

Stuartmagic,
It is the Sean Bogunia electronic Dancing Hank that this tread is speaking about. He has an updated version coming out. Just like computer software is updated so is this trick. So this will be Version 2.0. |

So if the secret is revealed in the video why wouldnt' you just make your own?

Jkta99,
The video will explain the presentation and working of the item, or how to turn on the unit. It will not show you a step by step soldering of electronic parts, and assembly of boards, cases, wires. Secondly, not all people are DIY people. if you have a degree in electronics I would think you could build your own. |

I imagine Sean will suffer losses because of this video. It's the way of the world to rip something off...I mean just check out the P2P sites (not going to promote them here)...free stuff EVERYWHERE just for the downloading. Sheesh...ya can't stop it, either.
I'm dead broke, but I'll be darned if I'm going to take food off someone's table, just to do a few tricks. Heck, if I never bought another thing, I probably have more magic stuff than I'll EVER use. Besides, I doubt the thing could be duplicated exactly anyway. Sean's a genius. His stuff is tested. He's releasing an improved version? My point exactly. I wouldn't call myself "religious" by any stretch, but we all have to answer for what we do. IMO, ya pays now, or ya pays later, but in the end...ya PAYS! Cheers! Doug |

I have only been doing magic for about three years but to say that it would be wrong to try and make something similar wouldn't be right. If this is the case why are there so many different manufacturers for TTs etc...? All tricks/effects have been duplicated or produced in another way so I don't think it would be a crime to form a different variation of it. I am not saying copy it exactly because that would violate copyright laws and such, but similar product? Sure, why not?

I agree, Dougini. I had a good idea how to make the dancing hank but I think my version wouldn't have been as good and I need reliabilty and Sean deserves to be paid for the trick. So I just bought the Imposible dancing hank, from Sean's website. http://seanbogunia.com/ . Yes it will take a lot of practice to get things syncronized. I am sure it will be worth it. I got a warm fuzzy feeling that Sean would be very helpful if something broke or needed replacement and he was very prompt at sending it to me. I got it in under a week. I will let you guys know how it goes as I practice.

Jkta99, I hope you didn't feel I was pointing at you. Bill just got me thinking, and remembering...it happens so much today. You are right, though. Why not come up with a way? Heck, Sean did! Little thing works, too. Nicely. Takes quite a talented person to run the act, though. I'm a little too old for that.
I like the old fashioned version, done on stage the way Blackstone used to do it...looks just like real magic! Doug |

Sean is a really coolguy, I talked to him over the phone. I played with his hank at my old magic shop. All I'm saying is use music. You'll thank me later.

I've been playing around with various versions of the Dancing Hank for some years and have most of them out. In my current act I combine several methods but have replaced the hanky with my 'tie'.
I start off by pulling the tie through my neck, it comes to life (via invisible thread) then I do the 'dancing hanky' but use Don Waynes version. The tie really looks great and I've made alterations to mine so it can be done surrounded. I work mostly on cruise ships and never know the conditions I work as ships vary. After the tie vanishes it is produced back around my neck.

That sounds kind of cool. Yeah, I'd like to put a nice hank routine together, I'd like to do it on street or stage.

With the version I use you can do it on the street if you wanted. I am using 'Wayne Rogers' version which can be performed surrounded and you can walk in to the audience with the hanky (in my case tie) dancing around the cloth.
