I have always had a fascination with bird acts. I use my doves in my current show; however, a Change Bag, Square Circle, and Devils Hank wouldn't be enough to call myself a bird magician. I am not seeking to be the next Greg Frewin or Lance Burton when it comes to working with birds either. I gave a "shout-out" in the Grande Illusion Forum to Dave Womach. I guess my intrest was sparked by his work with birds. I would love to open my show with a 2-3 minute bird routine. Anyone have any ideas?

Bryan, a 2-3 minute routine is not difficult. You need to decided if you want to be a dove act with other effects or a magic act with doves?
What I'm asking is what do you want the theme of your act to be. Also, are you looking to work your doves with props? Tony Clark has an excellent video tape out that has a lot of easy to do, opening routines with doves. It's Tony Clark Unmasks II.

Bryan,
Your Square Circle is an excellent prop for producing a dove. Show a feather, wrap it in a silk and put it in the SC. Show everything gone. Do a little hokus pokus and pull out the silk in a ball like it was put into the can. If you will unwrap the bird slowly as you tilt your hands toward the audience, it will look like the silk is coming to life. Guess who is there? NEXT? (Key item many magicians ignore: walk away from the table to produce the bird! Life is short; memories are shorter.) Enjoy your dove act. Bob |

Never treat Doves like casual props... they're alive!
One of my favorite method's of dove from silk is the Neil Foster Dove Production. Johnny Thompson has a highly effective production on Volume 3 called the No Body Load Livestock Production. Shimada is also a great source available on video as is Tony Clark. Good Luck Kregg

Like Dave, I would recomend Tony Clarks Unmasks. Are you wanting to do body loads or would you like self contained items?

Good references! I started and wrote Dove Hotline for about six and a half years. Tony Clark is currently writting that. He'll be a great help to you. (I'm trying to get two books finished.)
Johnny Thompson is my pesonal magic hero. Not only is he personally among the magic greats of all time, he is a fantastic mentor. Many current "magic greats" owe John a great deal of thanks for his investment in them. Shimada is the top of the heap, but I don't recommend him to someone with less than five or ten years in the pro stage show business. He is not for the inexperienced. But he is outstanding indeed!
