Is there a way to see the threads within new posts, or threads that are currently active? I don't see any place to click for that. Is it my device, or are those features not available?

When there are unread posts in a forum or thread, the icon is a red coffee mug. When you have read all of a forum or post, the icon changes to a white coffee cup on a saucer.
You can mark a forum (or all forums) as read if you like, and then new posts will trigger the red mug. As a new user, you are probably seeing all red mugs.
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
