I think it's a tough question because, as we know, reactions are not necessarily related to deceptiveness. A magician can use identical methods to effect a bill transformation, but changing $1 to a c-note will consistently provoke stronger responses than a lower denomination. There are also tricks that may garner a strong initial reaction, but might not be deeply fooling (e.g., shapeshifter change).
I know the original post asks for tricks, but in terms of methods, I think a pseudo-duplicate is a sure-fire way to improve most effects. In terms of fostering spectator conviction, it's hard to beat (and much stronger than a convincing control, pass or side-steal). For my money, one of the most deceptive and powerful card tricks is Harris' "Immaculate Connection" (which just so happens to rely on pseudo-duplicates).
Ellusionst discussing the Arcane Playing cards: "Michaelangelo took four years to create the Sistine Chapel masterpiece... these took five."
Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes: "You know Einstein got bad grades as a kid? Well, mine are even worse!" |

1) Prefiguration
2) Heart of Glass - Bannon 3) NFW 1) Classic Force 2) Torn card corner to impossible location 3) ACR
It's not their senses that mislead, it's their assumptions.

Four very deceptive to me:
1) Aronson's Shuffleboard and its variations - logically impossible 2) McDonald's Aces - impossible and visual 3) Chicago Opener - impressive followed by impossible 4) Ambitious Card - impossible over and over again |

There are also tricks that may garner a strong initial reaction, but might not be deeply fooling (e.g., shapeshifter change). Very astute! I'm a beginning mentalist, but what pushed me over the edge from layman to reading thousands of pages and many hours of videos on mentalism over the past months, was seeing David Blaine perform OOTW on one of his recent specials. It seemed so impossible to me, even though I had learned some card tricks before and knew a few basic moves. One thing that I had big reactions from is using several different handlings of OOTW in a row. Usually I won't do repeats of anything because I'm paranoid, but someone else always wants to try after the first person, so recently I started from a set up deck and allowed spectator one specific shuffle, then proceeded as usual. The second time around, the cards are already set up, and I false shuffle a lot, repeat. The third time I told them to go wild shuffling, then had the spectator try to "memorize" the values of the cards as I flipped through them, getting them to tell me the first and last card after we've flipped through. Switching some aspects of the handling makes it feel a little different each time, and the reactions sort of build as I go through. For some reason, most laypeople seem to react to this more strongly than ACAAN, though I'm still (like many mentalists) a bit obsessed with finding the perfect ACAAN. |

I cannot recommend Lonnie Chevrie's "Bob the Card trick" enough. It can be done with any deck and a marker. It is absolutely mind blowing and is fairly easy to do. When I did magic professionally, I closed just about every closeup set with it. The reactions are always killer. I have done it more than 1,000 times, not a single time did it fall flat or fail to get at least a couple of gasps.

January, I honestly have no idea. I got it in his lecture and have had no reason to look for it in any other place.

If I am not mistaken, this exact same effect was taught by Chris Mayhew in his second penguin lecture, as a part of a 3 trick routine (the third effect).
Maybe someone can confirm this

Hi Maxyedid,
Unfortunately I do not have any videos of my magic performances. I stopped doing magic seriously a few years ago and really only got into making video content after my full transition into mentalism. If you'd like to see videos of my performances I do have a website but you won't find any magic there. That being said, the trick is amazing and my half-assed presentation of it does it no justice. |
