If you are talking about getting a show like Chriss Angel or Blaine then you probably have a long way to go. However, if you want to be featured on a local station it won't be as difficult. Just contact a representative at the TV station and set up a meeting. Take in a package with a video of your magic and be prepared to show a few effects live. If you convince them that you have what it takes, you might get a 1-2 minute promo on the nightly news.

If you want your own 30 minute show, contact your local community cable access station. you wont get paid, but the exposure is good.

The other thing you can do is set-up a one-off publicity stunt, and invite the press! Hopefully your local TV station will turn up!

Press Releases are good for newspapers, and possible for tv as well, find the right newstations and such to send them too. Best bet is to write one about an upcoming performance you have, and if you peak their interest they will send a crew out to do a story.

Eddie,
You can also take it one step further. Make sure you're sending a press release to the media AT LEAST once a week. Will all the stories run? Heck no. Will your name become more familiar? Hmmmmm good idea Robert. Robert Bloor

Another good way is to keep your ear to the ground. Listen for any type of auditions or shows that will be shooting soon. Keep some feelers out there to see what is going on.
That is how we ended up with our first TV special. We heard through the grapevine that DCI was shooting a show for The Travel Channel. It was to be about Houdini and escape artists. Well, my wife Kristen Johnson, does some pretty cool escapes. We contacted the production company, pitched them the idea of having a female escape artist amongst all the men. They loved the idea and came out to a working/living artists studio that my buddy Sean Scott has. We shows them the Spike Escape (under close up conditions, unfortunately) and they drooled over it. Not only did they sign us, but I also pitched Sean Scott to them and they signed him as well. Plus, they shot footage of our Origami. It has nothing to do with escapes, but the featured me and my wife and compared us to how Harry and Bess worked togetehr. The show has now aired around 20 times in prime time and has done a lot for us. The bottom line is there is a lot of work out there....you just have to go get it.

I would say press releases are my best way. They work marvels for me. Anytime we release one they come flocking to us. You just can't do it every month. Pace yourself.

How could I do a press release
|
James Peters![]() Veteran user Romford, UK 385 Posts ![]() |
A press release is pretty easy, but there's a few things you need to be careful about.
Things to do ============ Make sure it contains all of the information about an event, including date, time, venue etc. Give some background about yourself. Let them know how many people you are expecting. Include a photo of yourself. Give contact details for yourself and the venue. Often TV people will contact the venue to get permission to film, then ask the venue to let you know they are coming! Send it to the right place, either by email or fax. You can normally find out where to send it on the web! Make sure all your spelling and grammar is 100% (and don't use all capitals!) Good luck, James. |
