A friend of mine gave me one of those beautiful Thomas Wayne wands that you may have seen on the Hocus Pocus web site. I am not actually a wand collector, per se, but over the years I have managed to accumulate several really fine wands.
This is truly the most beautiful wand I have ever had in my hot, grubby little forepaws. Whatever it cost, it is well worth the price. If the rest of his products are like this, and I have been assured that they are, I would have no qualms about recommending them to anyone.

Thomas Wayne does make some of the most magnificient wands on the planet. I cannot recommend his work more highly..."incredible" is the only word that accurately describes his wands.

Thomas Wayne does indeed make great wands. Check out images and my review on the wand he sold me:

That particular wand--The Malone Wand (because Bill Malone was the first, or one of the first, to get the masks in ivory at the ends)--costs over three hundred smackers. However, if you get a chance to hold one you'll probably realize that you're holding one of the nicest magic wands ever made!

I am glad everyone likes my Thomas Wayne wand. I am particularly proud of this wand. Joe Porper also makes some beautiful wands. This isn't surprising as both are in the same business. I have put up an image of two Porper wands in my collection for your viewing; it doesn't do justice to the wands but you get an idea of what Joe is capable of making:
http://users.adelphia.net/~gguerra/porperwands.jpg The top is the classic black center/white tip look but the white ferrules are solid real Ivory, the black is all Gabon ebony and the center metal joint is solid stainless steel(intended for the stainless steel Porper Cups). The bottom is a real beauty consisting of rare California Buckeye Burl, Gabon Ebony, and solid Copper metal rings/center. Enjoy. |

Joe does make some beautiful wands. I have two of them -- one that I got with a set of his cups and another that I purchased from a listmember. Both are really excellent.
Joe is also a very nice fellow. He is very particular about everything that comes out of his shop. I'm glad he is doing so well right now. He deserves it.

I agree with these posts regarding the Joe Porper wands as well...beautiful, durable, and unique. You really can't go wrong with a Thomas Wayne or a Joe Porper wand...these two guys know what they are doing and they do it well. Quality always come through in the end...you know the saying, and its true, "You get what you pay for."

OK, I've got to know. What could possibly make a wand worth several hundred dollars?

The same thing that makes a Rolex watch worth thousands, a Ferrari worth hundreds of thousands, and a Picasso painting worth millions. Some people want them and are willing to pay the price.

I received a very thorough PM directly from Thomas Wayne. He kindly explained with clarity the reasons for the price of his wands. I will leave it to him to decide if he wants to share his remarks. But I am satisfied that there are articulable reasons for the price, and not mere vagaries.

Since I have one of them, I KNOW the reasons.
I build musical instruments as an avocation. I know what it takes to do the kind of work that I see in my wand. I simply do not have the skills to do what he does. I'm glad there are people like Thomas Wayne and Joe Porper around who do have the skills and materials to do the things that they do.

Gianni,
Sorry if I came across as being sarcastic or rude. That wasn't my intent. I wasn't being vagarious, but I also maybe wasn't being direct. The idea I was trying to convey is that worth is subjective and ANYTHING you can buy is worth nothing more or less than you're willing to pay. Something that's "worth it" to you may not be "worth it" to me and vice versa. I've seen Thomas Wayne's wands in person and they're incredibly made, as is everything he makes (the same can be said for Joe Porper). Are they "worth" several hundred dollars? Only you can answer that question. Regards, Larry Davidson |

Another thing to consider is that if you're mainly performing for children at birthday parties, then the quality of your props will probably go unnoticed. However, some performing situations involve sophisticated and discerning individuals who appreciate quality when they see it. I often think of some advice I once heard from Jeff McBride: Successful people like to associate with successful people. From what I hear, this sort of advice is why guys, such as Bill Malone, go out and plop down three hundered bucks for a nice wand or several thousand for a nice watch. These little details add up sometimes.
Last but not least, sometimes we have to do things to keep ourselves happy. Although I like having a nice wand to use partly because it tells my spectators a lot about me. However, even if I didn't do magic professionally, I'd still like a quality wand for the same reason I like writing with a quality pen instead of a cheaper Papermate. |

If you do kid shows, then the Mercury wand would be a great one to have. It can be used as a weapon in a pinch.
