Can someone tell me why the two holes in the Palmo are different sizes? The instructions make no mention of this feature, but I assume there is a practical reason for it.
Thank you, David |

They needn't be different sizes. The various models I have of this (from different manufacturers) don't in fact have different sized holes.
If I had a palmo where the holes were different... I would probably have the larger hole on the bottom, under the theory that removing a preloaded silk would be easier with a larger hole. The smaller hole is better on the top, as poking of the silk into the gimmick is controlled by the fingers and this does not require a particularly large hole. Just one person's opinion....

I'd think the other way around.
A small hole can help in holding the silks in the bottom. A larger hole can make it easier for larger fingers to do a two middle fingers in the hole steal. So I'm guessing that could be the reason. I think there is reason to think both might be true for different Magicians. -Mary Mowder |

I have found that the steal is easier with the smaller (3/4") hole rather than the larger (1") hole, so small on top has that plus.

If you look very carefully at the Palmo, you will not the smaller is on the bottom, this help retain the load, the larger is for the stealing action, not a broader curve over at more of an angle. Notice the bottom is a just a little more conical. Rice's Palmo had both ends with a 3/4" hole. So I guess you got another make.

Thanks, Bill, I did get another make. I've ordered one that is advertised as "Rice design". Maybe that one is as you describe.

Today (December 25), the Fat Red Wizard of the North brought me a Palmo. Since the Rice model was recently discontinued, Santa's helper was provided with a link to the Laflin website instead. It's a good piece, sturdy but light in weight. It has the different sized holes. I'll probably start with larger hole up, though the very nature of a Palmo means worrying which way's up is not much of an issue for the most common routines.
I had an older, heavier straight tube with the dividing ribbon that sat unused forever because of its length, weight and the ribbon. I could just never handle the thing well enough to use it. This Palmo from Laflin is very nice. Just as a PS: I wonder if the different hole size and somewhat different shape of the two ends is more an artifact of manufacturing rather than an intentional design decision.

Hi, CJ - I began with the Laflin palmo and that's where my question started. Since then I've ordered a "Rice design" palmo on eBay and as Bill described, it has equal holes on both ends. Both holes are the size of the smaller Laflin hole. Now I'm playing with both to decide what I like. I found that Laflin large-hole-up works better for the standard routine (like Pop Hadyn's) because it's easier to pinch and produce the first silk when you say "I use two scarves". My fingers don't get into the smaller hole as well. Also, I think the Laflin model has a little larger capacity. On the other hand (pun?) I find the Rice design easier to handle because it's more snug on my finger and more streamlined. So I'm going to keep playing with them both and see which design best fits the routine I want to perform. David

Trying to answer my own question, I wrote to Laflin and got a nice reply back from David Laflin. The idea of the smaller hole is, as you all supposed, to help retain the first silk, but he didn't give a reason for the larger hole. He said that whether the larger hole was up or down was a matter of personal preference. He also said their newer palmos will have both holes the same size, but he didn't say small or large.

The Ladlin palmo I bought several years ago has both holes the same size: 7/8 of an inch.
