So many great names, it's going to be hard to choose! I initially liked The Maskelyne, I also like The Raven for its simplicity and it's one bird that does encompass the whole genre.
My addition to the pile is The Shunned Award as we are a corner of magic that the mainstream don't quite understand and like to treat with caution.... I can hear the announcement now - 'Prof BC has been 'Shunned' for 3 years running!' Darkly Dan |

For the reasons of currently residing in Cheyenne, WY (for those who don't know Tony Andruzzi was born in Cheyenne, WY) and being exposed to Tony Andruzzi at the begging of my magic journey (which changed my life) I have to vote for "The Andruzzi Award".

If I wasn't voting for Kotah and Lary Kuehn (Traveler's Zodiac Deck) I would vote for myself having released over 100 hours of audio programs and other products ast year alone but instead I voting for the two above gent's.

This certainly represents a lot of nominations; however, we might be getting a little off track, perhaps not, but it seems we might want a bit of clarification regarding naming awards.
The award in question may be named to honour a particular figure in magic, such as calling it the Cameron or the Andruzzi Award. Such a name usually (but certainly not always) is presented as a memorial to a person who is now partaking of glory, as Dickens might say. The award may also *or* instead carry a nickname, such as the Eerie or Spooky award--just as the Academy Awards are also nicknamed the Oscars (after Bette Davis' uncle, of all people!) Without attending to particular names or nominations, perhaps our first order of business should be to agree upon whether we wish to have this trophy carry a memorial name *or* a nickname. If we vote for a nicknamed trophy with no memorial attached, we may proceed in that direction. If, however, the vote is for a memorial name, then we *might* (possibly much later) wish to decide upon whether it should or should not also have a nickname attached to it--or else allow a nickname to evolve organically over the life of the trophy. Thoughts? BC

There are so many great figures in bizarre magic that I feel it will be hard to decide. So many great name possible to honor.
I vote for a more general name , a nickname for the award. |

I would say the starter of this thread (SH) should decide together with the maker of the award (BC). Otherwise, this could go on forever?
Alternatively: may be the two of you can come with a shortlist of three and then we can vote? Regards, Luc. |

Oh, I wanted to call it the Maskelyne until cooler heads prevailed. I wonder if I can be trusted.
A memorial name was my first choice, but I do fear that it could spark dissention because, as you say, there are so many fine and important figures to choose amongst. Selecting one automatically slights the rest. Dr. SH, who began this thread and is doing all of the work of counting and keeping up, has voted for a nickname award, and upon reflection that now seems a good call to me as well (for the reasons stated above). I would suggest the following 'short list' (but this is entirely unofficial, mind; just my favourites thus far in order of personal preference): The Dark Arts (appropriate on a variety of levels) The Ghostie (because Trivia is Queen of Ghosts, seems quite appropriate) The Uncanny (personal affection for the word, nothing more--admittedly terrible reason) The Spooky (also appropriate, but I am slightly concerned that it might be confused for some sort of 'official' Magic Café award, which it would not be) Only my two cents. What about a bit of both? Or, at least, two of them...
The 2016 Uncanny Award, a community favorite for excellence and innovation in bizarre magic and the paratheatrical, presented in the visage of Trivia, Queen of Ghosts. She is lovingly referred to as "The Ghostie".

I still think Ghostie.
"The high point in the year was being awarded the coveted Ghostie for my new effect...." " I was certain The Ghostie would be mine this year.. I could almost feel it in my hands... but it turned to vapor the moment ______ released his latest offering." "For years The Ghostie had eluded me.... " "At night I ponder the Ghostie.... sitting on the mantel illuminated by the glow from my fireplace.... " "How much is the Ghostie worth? Tisk Tisk child.... can one put a price on a human soul?" |

Not a fan of cutesy names. While I do like memorials I don't know about this case being it is awarding a product. Interested in the mechanism for awarding this as that is not trivial either. I'll submit a name, something based on tarot cards but also has that old pub sign feel - The Hanged Man

Let me say this right now with the hope you will all understand: The trophy will not be ready to send immediately. I am sketching out my plans for it (literally) at present and intend to show Dr. SH my ideas at ECSS (what a chance for us to get together from halfway around the world!) Only after I return home again (and begin university classes in earnest) will I have time to begin the sculpt: weeks rather than days there. After the sculpt is finished comes the moulding and casting: some days there to do.
So, just a note to this year's winner (the 2016 honouree, whoever you may be): Please do not look for your trophy until March or April at the earliest. I promise to do my utmost to make it worth your wait. For future winners, I will run up a number of trophies this year so they are lined up and ready to award at once in subsequent years. And finally a self-serving question: seeing as Spectre won last year, would anyone here have any objections to my creating and keeping a 2015 copy of this trophy even though the 'freshness date' has perhaps expired? Warm regards from my snowy mountaintop, BC
