Curious to know this, what are some of the mentalism books/effects/DVDs that you perceive to be underrated? Or hidden gems you wish to share?

Most things by Bill Montana. I use his material every day (both in professional work and my private life).

Too many to mention, and it takes time and effort, research and money to find them...
Plus, as ever, mentalism is character dependent, so a gem for one, waste of time for another...

However, I think is worth mentioning that sometimes creativity can make a lot of things work for ourselves... and what I mean here is to adapt ideas to our character, not the other way around. I also add that the only exception to the case above... is when the method itself is unappealing to the performer. Either you become comfortable with the method first, or you will be wasting your time. That being said, I don't know if it is a good idea to share gems here. As Iain said, it takes time, effort, research and money to find gems. Most of the best gems I found had just a little hype. Hype enough because it was too good. But little enough because when people see how good it is, they suddenly don't want to talk. Just think about it. Max Hazy

That's true... certain things you do not like to share here as it took a lot of time and thinking to make it your own thing. And it is also correct that often "little" things overlooked - as not hyped at all - lead to some very own and different creations. This combined with the (unfortunately) most often true impression that many readers here simply don't get it leads to the result of not talking about it at all...
Little example: I liked always Martin Lewis' "Technicolor Prediction", but none of the existing methods. Just not my thing - for good, but probably quite personal reasons. But who would be truly interested in it here? It is "old", not the latest and greatest although most things we find in there will have only a very short life span..., it is known a. s. o. It is a good, humorous and snappy opener which offers a lot of possibilities for your presentation. Just think about what you could tell in short about colors and influence. So, I was playing around with this plot for a couple of years, seriously, finally even creating a sort of prediction gag which I could incorporate. And by method finally I found something "own", inspired by Scott Creasey. At the end I had something which fitted my needs exactly, snappy, no table, no props which I could not carry in my pockets, something I could leave with the involved spectators and at the same time being able to perform it in front of a big audience. But I doubt I would ever write about it here . Jan

...here's the train of thought that I think happens...(this is said tongue in cheek, but kinda true)
1. somebody posts a picture of something interesting, an unusual item of some kind (lets say for the sake of argument, its a small pocket sized bowl) 2. the person posting it says "hey, I'm just sharing this because I thought it would be an interesting dicussion about what unusual objects other people use...or if they use none at all and their reasons why..." 3. no one else posts their pictures 4. sooner than later, people start asking "hey, where d'ya get that bowl from?" 5. OP shrieks in frustration, suddenly people want HIS bowl - and he knows full fell that the person asking just wants it because it looks interesting, they'll want the OP to post a link to it, they'll buy one, look at it, then go "stupid bowl..." 6. someone else posts "why are you using a bowl you idiot, no one will take you seriously because I DO NOT USE A BOWL!", and they scoff at the OP 7. the OP feels confused, because their initial question was pretty easy to understand and follow - but now they feel like they have to defend their bowl (its because they've thought about their character, and its kinda old school, it helps them feel unique and it ties in with the overall theme of their set, there's small and big reasons as to why he wanted to use a bowl, so he spent three days of his life going to antiques market, online, and buying others and testing them) 8. someone else posts "huh, not very 'magicians helping magicians is it' 9. someone else posts about how stupid a bowl is again 10. the OP is forced to remind them that in fact, at least three very well respected, modern mentalists use things like brass goblets, singing bowls and other old school looking objects and that they are somewhat influenced by them, which is another reason why they do it any and all hidden gems are bound to the individual who understands their persona, and what they perform, and can begin to imagine how to take something they read, understand the core of it, and using their own knowledge base, can twist and turn it into something that is precious and useful to them...

That's exactly it Jan.
ACAAN would be an exemple of mine. No "holy grail" felt right to me, they felt like a coincidence (which is not my thing). Even when I could actually HIT a pure "grail" it didn't felt like "the grail" for personal reasons too. Call it blasphemy, but I thought acaan was a very boring effect. When I came across a method and presentation that could fulfill my needs and my character, I saw people complaining about it. I think either the "armchair experts" complain precisely because they have no idea what they really want, or they just like to complain. I took it, embraced it, made it my "own" and finally I felt satisfied. That's why I second this: Quote:

The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell--book version or PBS series--is really good for premise and presentation ideas.

I always find myself going back to the Max Maven Video Mind series as it has so much rich and diverse material on it that is very simple to do and another is the Banachek Psi Series. Both are great to watch as both a person in the know and a regular Joe.

Scott Creasey appears to fly under the radar, yet has great releases.
Ditto to Doug Dyment. (Absolute off topic side note coming...) I'd like to see more from Phedon Belik (Proteus author).
