Hi,
I am reviving my interest in magic, and as part of this I want to get to watch the best performers. I live near London, UK. I am a member of a local society that has some good visiting lecturers, but I really want to get to see the very best (and I mean the best) close-up performers in action. How can this be done? I suppose most of their work is at private venues or restaurants, and therefore rather difficult to get to see. But are there other possibilities? Is there a UK equivalent (in reputation) of the LA Magic Castle? I know that John Lenehan used to (maybe still does) run Monday Night Magic - where I saw some great stuff about 5 or 6 years ago (including Guy Hollingworth). Is that still going? Are there other regular nights like this? I know that some magic conventions offer opportunities - although it can be a bit of a mixed bag. I am kind of choosey about who I'd watch. I know that there is probably a lot of mediocre magic around. I am not intersted in that. I want to watch the current "greats" - the pioneers. Can anyone share knowledge in this area? Many thanks.

Michael Vincent and Jerry Sadowitz. No question.
Whenever I find myself gripping anything too tightly I just ask myself "How would Guy Hollingworth hold this?"

What I like best about the three people mentioned so far is that they are so alike in perormance style.
Only kidding. Jerry Sadowitz, Guy Hollingworth, and Michael Vincent are truely astonishing card handlers. As good as it gets in England....It's been a while though. I'm sure this thread will offer up a new name or two. Jamie Badman and Colin Miller for example. Sadly the UK lost one of it's finest cardmen to suicide last year, the great Kevin Rey. I don't want to be picky but Jerry Sadowitz is from Scotland isn't he? And the title of the thread is 'The best close-up magicians in England. Unless maybe he lives in England now.

I've read somewhere that Paul Daniels is still performing, touring holiday camps. His style of performing may be a little out of fashion these days but he was (and is) very good. Vanishing Robert Maxwell's million was a classic.

Cad -you are right. I saw his "Audience with..." show last year. He gets a lot of criticism these days, but you cannot deny that he is a real pro and one of the UK's true masters of entertainment. His live show (chop cup, "electric" chairs etc) was just a delight to watch.
Some good names being mentioned... but - any good venues for seeing these guys? Or do you just have to be in the right place at the right time?
