Title: Whiplash Creator: Josh Janousky Publisher: Murphy’s Magic Supplies MSRP: $ 20 Skill Level: beginner to intermediate DVD Run time: 1 hour and 35 minutes Type of effect: Oil & Water, Sandwich routines Manufacturer's Write Up: Whiplash is a hyper-visual utility gimmick that will let you vanish, transpose, and transform cards. Learn Josh Janousky's signature routine with the Whiplash gimmick: Whipped Across, his take on the cards across plot. Cards visibly vanish and reappear one by one at the fingertips, the final occurring in a spectator's hands. Also, learn an updated variation of Oil and Water, a multi-phase sandwich routine, and a Monte game with a killer kicker ending. You will receive a custom gimmick printed by the United States Playing Card Company, ready to go immediately. In addition to the four routines, Josh shares how to repair and customize your gimmick - a new feature for gimmicks of this nature. It's an entire lesson on splitting cards, and is worth the price of the download alone. With kind permission from Mark Mason. - Thank you to Mathieu Bich and Eric Jones. How accurate is the ad copy? No deception, this is exactly what happens. What's in the box? Beautiful custom made gimmick on red maiden back card from USPCC. Key points: Whiplash is angle proof and can be discretely hidden in any deck. The possibilities with Whiplash are truly limitless. See for yourself. How are the production values: Murphy’s Magic always makes great videos – You get lots of HD camera angles, no weird background music, the talent is well mic’d. Everything is well done. Is it well made: Kudos to Murphy’s for giving you an actual gimmick that you can use right out of the box for $20 and not the “pieces” to a gimmick for $30! Is it well taught: Josh is a good teacher, you get performances with a spectator for all of the effects, plus patient tutorials. Josh also gives lots of kudos, thanks and credits to the people who have inspired him PLUS – there is a huge tutorial section on gimmick building and repair. What’s in the box – This was the one thing I kinda didn’t love about the video – at the beginning, Josh shows you the gimmick, but without talking about its make up or "what makes it special. In other words, he shows it to you and says “here it is” but doesn’t show you how to “use it” - and then the trick instructions just begin. You will learn…. WOW – Whipped Oil and Water – a standard separation and reformation routine. #awesome Whipped Sandwich – where the selection appears between two mates – vanishes and then leaps back into the deck face up. #killer Whipped Across – cards across routine where the last card jumps into the spectator’s hands #sogood Whipped Monte- easily the best trick on the download and worth the price of the entire thing. Repairing your gimmick – or building a new one – For this section you will need the knowledge of card splitting and just about every cut, paste, scissors, knife skill in your arsenal. Plus, you will need three cards every time you build a gimmick. Storage? Does it "pack flat?" It’s going to feel like a single “thick card – please be very careful in storing it. You could easily leave it in the beautiful cardboard box that it comes in. Does it "play big?" These are easily some of the most beautiful “impossible looking’ sandwich and cards across tricks I’ve ever seen. Difficulty / Skill level required: I’ll say slightly intermediate How much arts and crafts are involved? None, unless you want to build your own card How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Yes – and it’s 99% angle proof/ Overall score: let's toss out the traditional score of 1-10 and make this something that we all can appreciate and understand. ___X_Very Satisfied _____ Somewhat Satisfied _____ Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied _____ Somewhat Dissatisfied _____ Very Dissatisfied _____ No Opinion My thoughts I love this gimmick! The unique attributes that Josh has added make it a real killer. Perhaps the only downside is – you need to use the same card and mate for every trick – but that just means being careful about your performances and not “over using” the same cards. + Hey do you want to see my full review with even more of my opinions and ideas? I apologize for the confusion on the gimmick use. That was an editing mistake. I've told Murphy's about this, so it should be shown right away

I've used some of the similarly-based Mason gimmicks, and my only issue with them is that the gimmick looses it's elasticity after a number of performances and stops moving things as completely as necessary. Is the elastic different than has been used in the past by Mason, et al...? I know any elastic will loosen up over time, but in past effects it loosened too often for me to consider it worthwhile to maintain.

HAha thanks Aljaz! I hope you enjoy it!
Chessman - because of the threading system involved, the gimmick has even tension. So when the elastic eventually starts to be less elastic, it will still work because of this system. I also cover on the project how to repair it. The gimmick used in the video I used multiple times a week for a year before I had to replace the elastic. Hope that helps!

I like Whiplash. The routines are good. The gimmick is well made and clever. Josh is excellent teacher and I loved the card splitting part. And as initially excited as I was, this has now hit the drawer.
Is it so hard to state in the marketing text that the gimmick will come with a Bicycle MAIDEN BACK? It must be, because it is conspicuously absent. The picture that represents the video for Whiplash on Penguin shows Ryder backs used for the performance. Go to Murphy's page and you'll see a picture album for Whiplash with Red Ryder backs. No where do you see a picture of Maiden backs. No where is it mentioned that the gimmicks are maiden backed. It's kind of an important fact since this is be sold as "gimmick included" and I wasn't buying this to split cards and make a gimmick myself in order to use it. C'est la vie.
The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.

Hey Kalisz, we couldn't provide a rider back card as USPCC doesn't print gaffs on them anymore. Given the choice between Mandolin and Maiden backs, we chose Maiden since they are easier to ring in with a standard rider back. Plus since customization is taught on the download it does allow you to make up the gimmick with a rider back of you so choose. I can promise you that no one will notice the difference. I have used the Naiden design amongst rider backs for both lay people and magicians and no one has ever noticed. In fact sometimes I forget that the design is different. However, shoot me an email at Josh@JustJoshinMagic.com and let me see if I can help ya out with the rider back card.

Kaliix, that is a bummer to hear.
But don't drawer it, return it. Creators, manufacturers and vendors need to know what products folks are unhappy with. Throwing it in a drawer is a vote that you are using it as far as they're concerned. Plus, the money does add up more than you may realize. It's does the whole magic community a favor and is a win-win. |

I ordered this from Penguin. When I got the email with the video of it being packed, I saw the url addy at Murphys and the password, lol!
So I watched it, and as I had the 'necessaries' I made up my own single sided gimmick using the threading system. I like it, so far, and look forward to comparing Josh's gimmick with mine.

Josh, Kalix: Either Maiden or Mandolin will slip right by spectators. I've used both for various other routines and no one is any the wiser. Remember it's really only we magicians who even notice the difference in the back images. Most folks have no idea what is on the back of the Riders, let alone the others.
BTW, I'm going to try this again... one more time! Twice now I have had Whiplash in my shopping cart at Penguin and twice they removed it, leaving me a little note saying that the ran out of stock and so removed it from my cart. It then says I'll have to go put it back in my cart when it is back in stock -- yeah, right; like I'll remember to do that! Well, here goes again. Thanks! Jim |

I agree Mandolins definately do as little door by Roddy Mcghie is made in these . I don't think Maidens blend in as well so not sure why Josh chose these over Mandolins . Anyway why can't the creator make gimmicks in bikes and always go on about the US playing card company when other gimmicks come in bikes ? Regards Tarik 😊

Tarik, whenever a gaff is made by USPCC, if the back has to be modified at all, you can't use the rider back design. Since Whiplash is double sided, that meant that Whiplash couldn't have a rider back design. Maiden backs were chosen as Murphy's and I felt they were closer to rider backs than Mandolins. I'm in no way bashing manikins though. I really like them, and Garrett Thomas is a good friend of mine.
Jim sorry to hear theykeep running out! If you're still having a hard time getting your hands on one, send me a PM and I'll try and help

Ok Josh I just can't see how many other effects I bought at the Blackpool convention that are gaffed are rider backs ? I presume you are meaning they shouldn't be doing so just wondered is it the law or just ethics , best wishes Tarik 😊

USPCC will not print any gaffs that modify the back at all on rider backs. It's their policy. So if you purchased a gimmick with a rider back, it either only had a fave that was unique, it was printed a few years ago when you could use rider backs, or it was not printed by USPCC.

Maybe Josh they just make the gimmicks themselves as once you have bought your effect which I have you can then do . It's a great effect and I am getting to grips with it now . Best wishes and good luck with this as it's a very well made gimmick and a terrific idea Tarik😊

Turns out that Hocus Pocus doesn't have it in stock after all. They just don't bother to say so on their website. This isn't the first time this has happened with them, unfortunately. I need to remember this and make sure to buy elsewhere.
Thanks. Jim |

I know what mean about not showing whether in stock or not. HP has to catch up with the other guys and start showing current stock. They are lagging in this regard.
If I'm in doubt I will email them but it has happened that by the time I hear back from them that it is in stock the item is now out of stock when I place my order. If I have to call them each time then that is one more hoop I have to jump through so I'll just order from another vendor that keeps current stock on their website. If they don't wish to make these little changes then that is their choice but it is to their own demise. Which is too bad because I like the whole gang there and would support them more if not for this small issue. They have begun to ship faster so they are making improvements in that area. However, I don't believe they offer any free shipping either (or only with certain items) so that is another drawback. If I can get the same item faster and cheaper at Penguin or Magic and Such, then where am I probably going to order from? Hope you are listening HP. |
