Hi just wondered if you guys had any novel ideas that could be incorporated into a sleeve toss. I have seen flash paper used, gloves, and rubber ball all thrown from one hand to the other before the bird appears but was hoping to come up with something original.
Also when using a sleeve toss do you have any ideas how you can drop your arms down to your sides before the toss? I was thinking about your snap fasteners which would only be realised once some momentum was given to the toss but not sure if this would work and if it would be safe for the bird. Any ideas would be much appreciated. |

Richard, the sleeve toss is an opening effect and as such, there really isn't any reason to drop you arms. Afterall, you aren't trying to show that your sleeves are empty. The sleeve toss is meant to be a surprise effect.
With that said however, you can drop you arm and slightly cup the bird as it comes forward. Then the act of raising your arm releases the bird the rest of the way. A snap fastener might work but you'd be relying on the force of the bird to open it. I'm not sure that's a good idea.

I agree with Dave. The Snaps might not open, or if they do ....like Dave said you are relying on the force of the bird and it could cause the bird to get injured or even become flustered if they actually get released from the snaps. The sleeve toss is meant for the beginning and it will come as a huge surprise to your audience. Coming up with something different is hard, but does your act have a theme, you can start with that and then work with it.

Richard...bend the rules-I do it all the time-I don't do a sleeve toss until the middle of my act and it is totally unexpected. Just work around it. I keep my sleeve closed with velcro becasue it is easier in case, for whatever reason, the sleeve might open I can always just touch it back together and have it closed. Rick Thomas also doesn't do a sleeve toss until closer to the end of his act. Instead of having something turn into the bird why not have the bird come out of something instead, if you're looking for something novel. For example maybe tuck a silk into a folded cone of paper then "toss" out the bird. Open up the paper and show the silk is gone. -just an idea

Personally I use miniture door hinges that I spray paint black. Just run a wire to close them. I got that idea from Zicarte whose door hinges idea was stolen by other dove workers.
Or you might look into the Millard (mispelled) glove to doves gimmick. It allows you to put your hands down and I believe that is what Lance Burton uses. G0THIKE |

Good tip Dan, I didn't think about velcro.

I use velcro as well.. I make something vanish.. while I'm showing my hand empty, I pop open the velcro with my idle hand. (I'm always nervous the bird wont come out if I keep it sealed)..then I make the object reappear.. false transfer into the hand the bird will appear from, and toss the bird out. I love it because I end clean.. and I can keep my hand out there wide open until the bird comes back. Very believable in my opinion.
