As Gerald Manly Hopkins said of poetry, a reading is "to be heard for its own sake and interest even over and above its interest of meaning." In other words, the reading can be a beautiful experience in itself, beyond any cold information it may provide.
As X.J. Kennedy also said of poetry, a reading is NOT a "puzzle written in secret code with a message slyly concealed." The effect "(our whole mental and emotional response to it) consists of much more than a message." The symbolism, imagery, associations, and emotion can work deeply on the unconscious. As T.S. Eliot also said of poetry, the rational prose sense is most useful in keeping the mind occupied, "diverted and quiet as [the reading] does its work...." Eliot compares the meaning to meat a burglar brings to throw to the guard dog. A good reading is more like a song as compared to fortune cookies or newspaper horoscopes, which are more like cheap jingles.
