I don't keep a close eye on Tenyo prices because I have no intention of selling my collection.
But, is It my imagination or have the prices for Tenyo in the after market been falling? |

Yes. There is a definite cooling of the market.

They've been falling for over two years. Most collectors have all the items they want at the price they're willing to pay.

I keep track of items that sell on Ebay and generally prices have dropped around 40 - 50% when on auction, the truly very hard to find items which you almost never see kept there value more or less, but even then, the days of a BNIP Ultra Tube selling for +500 USD are behind us for sure.
Good example was a recently sold Dyeing Paper for 10 USD! |

The good days when an Ultra Tube sealed on the card sold for $1500 on eBay.

Interestingly, the significant increase in Tenyo prices coincided (or arguably overlapped in time) with the Richard's announcement of upcoming Tenyo books. The same can be said for the significant cooling and normalization in Tenyo prices after the release of Richard's books.
I believe, in part, that many Tenyo collectors were satisfied with the beautiful images and descriptions found in these wonderful tomes that it met to some extent their compulsion to get them all (with the accompanying highs and lows once you learn the secret... Ultra Tube is not worth $500, come on). From my perspective, I know I overspent on quite a few of them when the Canadian dollar was close to par with the US dollar. With the current exchange rate and outrageous shipping costs I cannot imagine ever paying those prices again or even one day getting a return on investment. On the positive side, I do have a very nice collection and have no intention to sell |

Prices started falling almost a year before Tenyoism came out.

Things go in cycles. I built the majority of my collection in 2012 area. The Tenyo forum was very active then and many of us were actively building collections then as well. I have all but a handfull of the most rare items and not really interested in paying large prices for them. A few items I paid high prices for but also found many deals so in the end it worked out. Although I am not actively buying now, ironically it seems like there is more items that come up for sale then when I was actively searching. This is also causing pricing to moderate I am sure.
For me it was the thrill of the hunt. |

I would imagine that quite a few of us are in our late 40's to early 50's. We got into magic from 1974 onwards and bought the early Tenyo with our pocket money. As time went by, we kept some Tenyo and lost some tricks along the way . Then later on with eBay etc discovered the wonder of seeing our first tricks still available, so with more "pocket money" now available, a latent hobby sparked into life and the collecting began again. We are at a phase where most of us probably have bought and traded and ended up with a nice wee collection stashed under the bed. Hence a quiet period of trading which will drop the price. The heady days of £500 pounds for a Billscape etc. are now over as the real enthusiasts probably own everything that they want.

Daisydod, I agree with your observation, however I am surprised there are no new collectors from that 40-50 something subset you mention. Especially since the higher profile given to Tenyo since the publication of Richard's tomes. I'm sure many expected price to keep rising...

Yes, I also thought the publication of the book would give a lift to prices. Since it did not, however, we can only assume that most people who are interested already have the older items they want.

It will be interesting to see what the next generation thinks about magic & magic collection.
Or, Is it just those of us who have a connection to the "houdini era' through our parents. My kids grew up on pretty sophisticated magic, ala Copperfield, Blane, P&T et al. And let's not forget the on-line impact on magic for those interested.. Or, is the next generation so sophisticated that 'our' magic is just ho hum for them and they will be collecting old computers. |

I think the next generation will be less inclined to collect our "crap" and will focus on what had meaning for them. From what I notice from my kids, but mostly my friends older kids, is they focus more on the digital and intangible things and have less attachment to "toys".
I have about 6000 comic books and no kid caring to read them. Then again, for $60/year they can read all of the Marvel Comics on Marvel Unlimited (kind of like Netflix) which I spent years and 10,000$+ collecting. Same can be said for sports cards. Pretty sure the same will apply to my magic library and 30 year + run of Genii Magazine which one can now own on a memory stick. As for Tenyo, I am not sure many youths will grow up to see value in a $500 Ultra Tube. |

Excellent subject post & discussion Lads. Numerous aspects are involved. Highly debatable too. Like the old days round here, which we all seem to miss greatly. Kudos all.
