I've heard this term mentioned often in the last few years. What precisely does it mean? How does it differ from regular capitalism?

Belly laugh of the day! Merci!
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

The difference is who benefits. If it is someone else it is crony. If it is you who benefits it us regular.

Get with it Jack.

"Crony capitalism is a term describing an economy in which success in business depends on close relationships between business people and government officials. It may be exhibited by favoritism in the distribution of legal permits, government grants, special tax breaks, or other forms of state interventionism."

"Crony capitalism is the marriage of the state and private special interests. Some people have called it corporatism, mercantilism, fascism, or even Communism."

Is that the same as regular capitalism? I wouldn't say so. YMMV.
Make America Great Again! - Trump in 2020 ... "We're a capitalistic society. I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. They're not going to bail me out. I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone help me? No." - Craig T. Nelson, actor.

My mileage was to make a joke and help jack not be banned.

So it is Marxism.

I think Jack is, how do they say it in the U.K., taking a p1ss, at anyone who thinks he doesn't already know what it means.

Haven’t you noticed that all the crony capitalist grant-grubbers, eco-loons and junk scientists are Marxists?

Oh I know what he is doing. It is just not too many posts down the road before he crosses the center line and is banned. I like having him around. I would like to prevent that.

Crony Capitalism is well defined above. A specific example would be the giving of hundred million dollar loans to solar companies with no viable business plan.

Kinda depends on what you mean by Capital (as in the seat of state or the resources in the society). And whether you believe that money has no smell. An easier question might be "is free market capitalism possible when a government sponsers entities?" If you want to use Adam Smith's market ... or a Monopoly game model ... imagine the guy who plays banker has extra monopoly sets and he'll trade favors outside the game for cash and hotels and...

or in modern language... large scale money laundry but with some small traceability by way of public records of bills, votes and other records when money moves between accounts.

There are several definitions above. Which one were you referring to?

Money is not wealth but is merely a claim on real things which is wealth but now the old bankers have a claim on money and that is why we have old crony capitalism. Therefore then one must kill the bank like old hickory did.

Can you get banned for questioning capitalism? (Makes the sign of the T on his stomach.)

Hmmm...so the definition of crony capitalism is "not my crony's capitalism"?

Somewhere in there we need that Judge Dredd "I am the law" line - read by Sylvester Stallone Smile

Another word being explored is "kleptocracy" - with a trophy that says "Stolen fair and square".

The essence of capitalism is competition. Crony is essentially the opposite competition. Where we have seem no competition and extreme cronyism was in places like the Soviet Union and in Germany under the National Socialists with monopolies etcetera and a form of power structure in which power actually resteed with a small number of people.

Then those who seek to eradicate crony capitalism should favor a metaphorical wall built between business people and government officials?
