Well, I can not think of a true artist that has not made it his own.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Perhaps this is opposite of what you are asking, but who remembers the band Devo covering the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction? I heard it played once, and after the song the DJ said, "The rolling stones wrote it, and Devo," I was waiting for him to say "Killed it," which is my opinion. Instead he said, "Perfected it." I disagreed.
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right!

The Supremes had a #1 hit in 1966 with You Keep Me Hangin’ On (written for them by Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland). A year later, Vanilla Fudge did their own unique version which hit the top 10.

I'd go with "different" - as with the Flying Lizards version of Money or Iggy Pop's take on Louie Louie... as well as the original of Louie Louie and the Kingsmen version Smile

I’ve always loved Jefferson Airplane’s interpretation of Donovan’s Fat Angel (recorded live at the Fillmore).

Sometimes "making it your own" is bad idea. Case in point: Mel Torme covering The Turtles' "Happy Together". Really, Mel?

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

Janis Joplin's another one.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_and_Bobby_McGee

"Me And Bobby McGee" was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster and was first recorded by Roger Miller.

So it's a song about a GUY singing about the girl who travelled with him and eventually left him for some stability.

Janis now OWNS that song and everyone thinks it's about a GIRL lamenting and loss of her guy.
"There's no time to lose," I heard her say.
"Catch your dreams before they slip away."
"Dying all the time, lose your dreams and you could lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?"

Yes, Dylan's original version is also good. It comes in at about 2 1/2 minutes.

Mel did some interesting stuff with Was Not Was.
