I'm just getting into rope magic and I want to learn a specific ungimmicked (i.e., no magnets, TT, etc.) version of C&R rope. I know the "standard" one that starts with the performer holding both ends of the rope in his left hand and lifting the center as a loop into his left hand. I want to learn the one where the performer holds one end of the rope, runs the scissors out to the middle of the rope, and brings the center back into the left hand. Does this version have a specific name? Can someone tell me where it is taught on video or in print.

There is a version of the method you speak of in a book titled "Cut and Restored Rope" on amazon dot com. Do a search in amazon with "Al Schneider Magic" I have used for over 40 years.

Thanks, Al. I'll do that.
By the way, do you know if there is a video of a performance of this method anywhere? |

Thanks for the references Mr. Long.
I learned the move from Tarbel V6 p159. I have used it in every show since that time.

The one John Long suggests from Tarbell 2 is what I have started to use. As an added bit of comedy you can say something like
"It's very important for this particular effect that the rope is cut exactly in the center." Make a big deal out of sizing the rope's lengths up, then cut and let the ends dangle so that there is a dramatic difference in their lengths. "Oops. Well, this can happen sometimes, fortunately I know of a solution to this particular predicament." Proceed with the routine. I believe the bit about having the cut 'off-center' is from Wilson's book, but I've loaned that one to a young friend of mine so I can't verify that at the moment. |

Miky, and the others above: The principle you are discussing is the EDWARD VICTOR method. It has become the "standard" of the "no prep.") C&R rope.
It is basically flawed, because the move must be done, when the audience's attention has been focused on the two rope ends. LEON MAGUIRE solved this in HUGARDS MONTHLY, 60 years ago. (Maguire "changed the moment"!!!) I wrote this up in my book, in great detail. JACK CHANIN and I had a session at the MAES convention, back in '53, in Norfolk, VA. Between Maguire, and Chanin, I "got" what I consider to be the "right" handling for the C&R. The basic "work" for the whole routine is TIMING! "Vishnu" is basically the same "move" as "Victor". The difference is that the set up move is done with the scissors. When Jay Marshall added the C&R rope to his act, he used VISHNU. Jay did it as good as I've seen it done! BTW, Dariel Fitzkee wrote, "The Only Six Ways To Restore A Rope" in 1944. Later, he wrote, "Rope Eternal". Every C&R rope routine that I have EVER SEEN, in 70 years, uses one of the six principles that Fitzkee writes about. (Even Ted Collins, "Panama".) The late Harold Taylor "caught me" with his use of one of Fitzkee's principles at a lecture in Magic Inc. 40 years ago!!! Jay and I had a good laugh, when Harold tipped it! I think it was a Doctor "Ervin" who also claimed to have invented the Victor move. Probably the "flashiest" C&R, is the so-called BILL NEFF C&R which was sold by the late Percy Abbott, in the '40s. The late Will Lindhorst had sold the "Vanishing Bird Cage, C&R Rope" long before Abbott. (I have Lindhorst's mimeographed advertiement.) My friend the late Harold Denhard had done it years before Abbott, also. Miky, if you really want to "know" the real work, see my book. It includes Maguire's method, my slight improvement on Maguire, the "Dr.Daley Knot", Chanin's TIMING concept, ETC.

Brandon!
I forgot to mention how to "cover" the uneven ends that result from cutting the "fake" bight. I wrote THAT up in the book, too. I DEVELOPED A WAY TO AVOID THE UNEVEN ENDS! ("This aint my first day on the road!") HEE HEE

Hi John!
It's "DICK OSLUND - ROAD SCHOLAR". Nearest dealer to you, is Denny Haney. (No one has asked for their money back----yet!) I NEVER thought, as a teenager, that I would, someday, write a book that's selling in four continents! PM me, if you have more questions! Dick
