Just saw this at Penguin: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/8005
It sounds like an interesting effect, and it comes with a gimmick too. |

Looks like this is basically those energy bracelet demonstrations but with the words being the apparent cause instead of the jewellery.
Something really similar came out quite a while back called the Lost Symbol (or something like that) whereby a symbol was the cause of testing weak or strong. I like the kicker ending on this with them being unable to tear the paper, should get a laugh (also the reason for a gimmick). |

This looks almost IDENTICAL to a routine that Lior Manor recently shared in his Penguin lecture (right down to the final phase of being unable to tear the paper).
Incidentally, there are a few other resources that I can think of off the top of my head that teach the basics of this routine (at least based on the content of the demo) - not the least being Bruce Bernstein's "The Ritual" from his phenomenal book UNREAL. I'll be interested to hear/see what advancements "Silent Control" offers over previous renditions of the premise. Best, Drew

Ah so the bit that was new to me is actually already published... wonder what this does offer then as the tests are published in a few places?

I am guessing that once they can't rip the "paper" somebody is going to want to grab it from them and try for themselves.

Prop dog sells tear/no tear pads for this type of effect. The sheets alternate. You need a very good presentation for the method to not be immediately obvious. It's more of a gag than magic.

Weak uses a different method/set up to achieve a similar result. Silent Control uses only the paper from what the demo and product description states. Again, not sure what's new about this that makes it worthy of release... Best, Drew

Weak by Persius is def different, they tear a playing card, and its not got tyvek paper in it, if you try to use tyvek in a card it wont work, the card tears easily, for some bizarre reason I'm not sure of.
i don't think the public at large are that familiar with tyvek, but it could be a risk, not so with Weak. |

Yeah I really liked Weak by Perseus. The arts and crafts really put me off though. My gimmick never really held together. Having said that, I can see how a blend of the 2 effects would really work. Writing the words weak and strong on 2 playing cards and playing out Ricks take and moving into Perseus' move for the final phase. He has a nice clean up so that the card can be handed out to others to tear up afterwards.

Can someone (Rick, Alan or someone at Penguin) comment on this...?
Tony Andruzzi was doing this type of routine five decades ago. Bruce Bernstein also had a version, crediting Tony. And Lior Manor has a wonderful routine! How does this compare to the work of above mentioned artists and is everyone credited? Thank you for your reply. All the best Aljaž |

Very sad to see this come out just three weeks after Lior Manor's excellent Penguin Live lecture. Do yourself a favor and spend an extra ten bucks for Lior's lecture and learn this and a whole lot more.
