If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

There is only one future. You will be there later. You will indulge in angst.
You will complete the circle. You will feign confusion.

After those 2 posts I have no reason to feign confusion. My confusion is absolutely genuine.

@md and Danny
Language/weapon: knowing Tag, you're it (now) See you in 3000 when you bring it And then there really is no free will - she has the child, we go travelling and affect them (huge hint and a wink from the authors) That's a great deal of moral leverage against exercising free will. But the moments are when the characters make choices. I did it my way vs you did it anyway - which? A nontrivial question if you equate causality with determinism. Hero/villain? Martyr/carrier? What's left after the ships fade into mist? JonT P.S. I saw it as a cautionary tale with invitations to discuss the tangential issues.

I see two aspects of the movie:
Louise is the "weapon" communication tool to get all of of Earth's humanity to solve a problem for the aliens in 3000 years and yet Louise does not communicate with her husband that their daughter is going to die? Communicate for all of humanity to solve an alien problem in 3000 years versus not communicating with her husband of their personal future of the death of their child... Looks like to me she did more harm to her marriage in the long run... What am I missing? Help me to understand???? |

I had high hopes going in, but I was underwhelmed by the movie. I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars. It just felt like it never fully developed. That's just my opinion.

In Ted Chiang’s original short story, the aliens are called Flapper and Raspberry, but the movie takes its alien-naming approach a little more seriously. Like his real-life counterpart, the alien Abbott (who often appears on the left) is actually a little taller and skinnier than Costello. Costello is also, appropriately, the chattier of the two. |

? Abbott and Costello -> who's on first, what's on second...
in the story they had other names. gift/weapon - consider what happened after they gave the gift - and what they said we would do in 3000 years

If you take the film story at face value - and look at what's there before and after the events as depicted... Ordinarily we recall, we consider, we expect - our actions are guided by all three. In the story "they" claim there is no time. When the linguist accepts this mode of experience the alien ships vanish. Whose perspective on the matter is more useful? Whose actions were moral/correct/sensible?

The premise of the film is that if time is circular you can discover that Jeremy Renner is a jerk because causality is a farce.

Okay, so who do we believe, the Alien Ink Writing Squids from this movie or Sarah Connor from Terminator.
Basically, one says the future is set while the other says "The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves." |
