Really cool performance Watkins. Great premise, and was really impressed how gently you handled both the participant and effect.

Thank you, Jeff.
I wanted to make sure that anyone who reads the secrets contained in the "Negative" portion of the book ought to know that this material needs to be handled gently. I always give my participants a few chances to decide if they would like me to reveal this information before I do. -Watkins |

The books are now going to start being printed and shipped to buyers tommorow.
So expect them a lot earlier than previously mentioned. -Watkins |

Here is my challenge:
I am thinking of an author, whos dark, philosophical and pessimistic tales greatly inspired my philosophy of Mentalism (especially the Positive/Negative book itself) CLUE: it is NOT an author of magic books, nor is this author a magician/mentalist The first person to comment the name of this author will win a free copy of Positive/Negative. Use your intuition. -Watkins |

I had the pleasure of getting to meet Watkins a couple of weeks ago in New York City. Firstly, I must thank a very talented mutual friend for introducing us: Tatanka, you're the best.
Watkins was kind enough to share one of the pieces found inside Positive/Negative with all of us. All I can say is that it was powerful, real and clear: exactly what mindreading should be. I was also very impressed by some of his ideas, subtleties and thinking. He's a name I'll be looking out for and I truly wish him the best with this newest publication. Sasha PS: Lemony Snicket? |

In the last year I have had quite a few people ask me to review their books but I have been unimpressed with nearly all of them. When Robert asked me to read and review his, I might have thought that he was a gentleman and an outstanding human but I was going to go easy on him. I'm not only an academic student of psychology but I am also a well read mentalist. I read his book with a critical eye and although not all of the material will go directly into my act (no book thus far has had that pleasure), much of it will. Where should I begin? How about the aesthetics of the book itself. After I finished reading it, I encouraged Robert to not release it as a PDF at all (yes it was that good). I told him to release it as a limited edition hard cover book and to charge more than double what price point he settled on. It wasn't my book so who I am to decide but I thought that what he was sharing in this book was worth 10x what he chose to sell it for.
I absolutely love hard cover books but I think that many people print them too large, which should only be done if there are some extravagent photos inside (such as a book about fashion design), not for books with linguistic content. Robert chose a proper size for a book with this sort of content and that appealed to me. The front image is clearer than the bad image but that was done intentionally and fits Robert's sense of artistry. Inside the pages are the usual thickness that you would expect, to which nobody will have a problem with (I guarentee it). __________________________________________ The content has some methods that we are familiar with (which I will not go into here) but his scripting for it is unique and it makes sense. With Robert's material there is absolutely no fear at all. He could describe to you how to perform neurosurgery and you would probably look at his scripting and have no fear (thank god he doesn't but if he did, that would definitely go on the negative section of the book). The book is divided into positive routines that most mentalists would perform in a casual setting, and they go with most characters. All of these routines are fantastic but they don't appeal to my dark nature. There are so many mentalists performing more casual and non-controversial mentalism today and not enough digging into the darker aspects. The darker aspects remind me of the concept of Carl Jung's "Shadow" theory. They are about digging into the parts of our psyche as human beings that we don't want to think about but that take us to new heights when we do. Jung said that a tree cannot extend into heaven unless it's roots reach down into hell and that is what the negative part of this book does. Now we can get into an ethical discussion another time about whether or not you should do these performance bits but I will describe to you their power. Thanatos, is Robert's original plot (it's rare that I come across something original) in which he is able to tell a participant the date for which they will die. Think about how powerful this is, if you were able to tell a particpant specifically when they will die and convince them to take this seriously. Robert literally does it! Think about how that could take someone who has become mundane in their life and shake them literally to the core and they now realize that their life has more purpose and they are driven towards the future. When he first shared this with me, I thought that it was real magic because it could take someone like me who is merely living, and make me stop doing what I have been a slave to doing, and make me do what I should do for me. Prior to going to the university if he would have performed this for me, I would have realized sooner that my old occupation wasn't what I wanted to do and that I shouldn't waste time postponing what I wanted to do. In the same way that Carl Jung was able to have his patient think about a memory, in which the person thought of a golden beettle, and then when they opened their eyes and that beetle hit the glass of his office, so has Robert managed to elevate his magic unto heaven by stretching it down to the darkest places of hell. I will write more later. Jacob did a fantastic job going through the routines but I want you to see how powerful that they are from someone who has studied psychology. Cheers, The March Hare |
