Dannicus I didn't have any suggestions for something that small. I just finished some sliding panel doors for an entertainment center out of black walnut but I cheated and used a small strip of Delrin along the bottom.
Cleverpaws Welcome!! thanks for that tip. I'm ordering some tonight to play around with it. |

Box 98 was never intended to be a puzzle box but you know the conmunity. By making it a lot more attractive I guarantee it will attract more scrutiny so the balancing act will be to make it as examinable as possible without sacrificing the load speed too much. It's always about weighing the compromise but I am sure everyone here is aware of that lol.

I used slick strips (ultrathin adhesive backed UHMW polyethylene tape) inside the Master Dragon Sticks to decrease any friction on the side walls of the slider (on the bottom the sliders roll on ball bearings). They work really well on some applications but I think this joint is too tight for them. Here is a link to slick strips/tape. Lots of good uses for it too. It's pricey but pretty amazing. I use it on some table saw jigs as well. Really makes them slide well and the stuff is tough too.

Dannicus, I think Box 98 was/is killer. Count me in on a hardwood version.
I agree with Gimpy about the "carving" on the Dragon Sticks, but for that application I think the design makes sense. Not sure about Box 98. I guess it all depends on the story we weave with it. Since the majority will most likely use a folded card with the box, I wonder if a frontier or western design would make sense? Something a gambler may have carried his lucky dice in? I think erring on the side of simplicity and just producing a beautiful and elegant box - that may in fact be old, we don't know - makes the most sense. Performers can theme practically any premise around that. Looking forward to Box 99.

Dancing,
Oz makes a good point about simplicity being golden. (especially for your wallet) Personally I think a nice celtic cross or knot would look sweet but might not work into to many routines...... (gotta keep you making money!!) What/where are these puzzle box competitions you speak of? Inquiring minds are drooling....... Dan |

It would be more easy for me to spin a story around an ornate box than a simple one. Before cardboard everything came in a wood box.I would guess most were discarded or tossed in the fire. Special things were kept in special boxes, still are today. I would think it more likely that an ornate box would have survived. I would think patina would be as important as the decoration. Might be best to not focus a story line around the box and let it tell its own story of for some unknown important purpose it must have served. I would guess that a spectator would be less likely to get rough with something of such importance.
Dannicus, I noted that some of your work has real gold leaf. Curious as why this is better than the simulated gold leaf. Gimpy

To me it represents a quantum leap forward in design to let tge spectator open the box, and the load is so dast abd clean.....to each his own I guess. Those who own it realize it has to have some design on the sides of the box to hise how it works. It did make me question why others couldn't seem to get it. I am just glad some did. I buy a ton of magic, often stuff I know I won't use even because I like to support the art. But I have to say box 98 is the only one I use these days because it floors my audiences.. Even magicians when they see thevway I load it.. Usually it flies right by them and then its too late Like you and Gimpy, I am a story teller. I think it adds interest to have a sliggtly strange prop. Especially when it works so well they still have no idea. For the wooden version I am thinking the pyramid with the all seeing eye in gold relief on the top. Kinda make the box itself a mystery item/enigma. Whatever I put inside has a way of coming true...something along those lines.

When I use the 18 kt gold leafing pens it seems to stay brighter and even patina more realistically. It's a little thing and probably just me being too critical, but I just thought it looked better in the long run and it probably only costs a couple bucks per box extra. The truth is, I could probably have used a sharpie, cheapening the finish, and put more money into nicer packaging and people would have not known the difference. Probably even reviewed them better. I just always thought it was better to put the quality and value into the prop. The box to me just needed to be adequate for shipping, but maybe I am wrong. The Wizard guys were brutal on Box98 and the shipping box. We bought cheap recycled chipboard boxes and stamped them with biodegradable ink. I did it to be more environmentally responsible plus keeo the cost down for people but thevWizard guys had me regretting trying to do the responsible thing for a while there anyway.... You can't please everyone I guess. What to you guys think of the pyramid and eye design?

Dannicus, just to clarify, when you say "Wizard" you mean the Wizard Product Review from World Magic Shop, correct?
Because I know this Wizard (me) has given you nothing but praise. I just don't want folks thinking I'm not anything less than 100% behind your work!!!

Hi Dan,
Where in San Diego are you located? I'm out in East County in Blossom Valley (between El Cajon and Alpine). I just finished building a new 2,000 sq. ft. woodshop/RV barn where I am getting ready to teach woodworking to Wounded Warriors. If you ever get out east, give me a call and we will talk shop (woodworking or magic).

San Diego, CA It's a fact! - Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. (This line censored by Dave Scribner because it is in Latin) - What you believe is real, is real! Who was that masked man and what is he all about? - https://www.pinterest.com/garydsalisbury/ |
