For the guys who do the melon load (or version of) under their hat for the cups and balls, I have a question. When you reveal the melon/whatever, do you just lift the hat and reveal, or do you lift the hat and let the load fall out? Which do you feel is more dramatic/magical? This is something that I've been kicking around, just wanted to know what your opinions on the matter are. Thanks. The Other Jim

Good question. I pick it up and let it drop with a thud, which is what Gazzo does. The thinking is to comminicate the weight of the object. It falls with a thud and shakes the table a little bit.
Later, pal.

Any time you produce a large object, I think it's important to let everyone know it's solid. A bowling ball production is no good if you don't drop the ball so everyone knows it's real. When Don Alan lifted the hat and the huge nut was underneath, he always picked it up and banged it on the table to prove it was real. I personally think that dropping the melon from the hat looks better, but if you lift the hat to show it, let 'em know it's not a collapsable rubber one.

Cellini always told me to drop it....stronger I think...but they sometimes break!

Just be careful how high it is off the table when you drop it. A cantaloupe is probably a better melon to use than a honeydew.

If you want something a little different, you can get a very large baseball, about the same size as a melon, from sporting goods stores. They are used to collect autographs. They won't break when you drop them on the table.

If you pick up the - then wait (drama pause) then drop it will get a much bigger reaction.

And because when you pick it up - hold higher - more people can see and the effect becomes greater in size instead of lifting the hat only.

Do what Danny says. . . just with the melon though.

I drop the melon and before it hits the table I swing my hand under and catch it.
The advantages are that you can drop it from a higher height, even give it a flick up. People still see the the weight as it hits your hand. (Helps if you can juggle)
