Hi! Do you have any ideas where I could find collapsible bars as the ones used in any vanishing dove cage? How are they built? Thanks for your help!

They aren't bars, they are the kind of thin metal used to make tape measures and are put on a roller blind device to roll them up

Brian is correct in explaining one method however there are several ways to make them retract. Overall, most "bars" are tape measure material that has been plated or polished. Another option is to actually put individual tape measures into the base itself. This is the method I used 15 years ago when I had no idea how it was done. Turns out that some companies now use this method. There is another version by Norm Neilson which I will not expose.
I hope this helps Chance

How when they did not have tape measures back then, they used folding rulers. I believe they uses metallic string back then.
Abbott's uses real wood dowel bars and they are spring loaded to pop up. There are several methods, even elastic. |

Heck my dad's an electrician and he still uses a folding ruler! :o) A few weeks ago, Ray Goulet told me that he has Cardini's vanishing dove cage, in his museum and it has tapes. (It is my understanding that General Grant also once had the cage in his possession.) So I'll check it out for sure... I'll ask General Grant in a few days when he comes up for lunch. |
