My Imaginary Friend
"Mark's talent for thinking outside the box is in over-drive here - this is just unreal! Stunningly original, absolutely impossible and very, VERY weird!" – Dave Forrest For several years I have been working on material that is very much ‘out there’ in terms of presentation and impact. Effects that are so intense, unusual and powerful that they provide a totally immersive experience for the participant. Rather than them thinking that they just saw a trick, they are left thinking “WTF. Just. Happened." The first of these effects to be released is called My Imaginary Friend. On one level, it’s Elsdon goes a bit Jerxy. Because I think it’s fair to say that if you like the kind of material that The Jerx (thejerx.com) creates, then you will absolutely LOVE My Imaginary Friend. This is not something you will do at your regular walkaround gig. No. This is the Big Guns; the thing you will do when you have a little bit of time and decide to totally melt someone’s brain. "Yes Mark, I want one! But what’s the effect?” Well, that’s part of the fun and the surprise. I’m not going to tell you the exact effect! I will say this though: it features a totally impossible prediction that leaves the participant with a permanent souvenir that they will keep forever. They also get to witness something that simply cannot possibly be true, even though they make it happen! If you want to leave someone with a memory they cannot believe but will never forget, then you MUST learn My Imaginary Friend. Tricksy sleight-of-hand required? Nope. Sneaky gimmicks? Nah. Special props to carry? No, none. Does it use playing cards? Happily... no! Is it English-dependent? No siree. It will work in any language whatsoever. Better for magic or mentalism? Perfect for both. To date, My Imaginary Friend has been seen by hundreds of laymen and just one magician, and you can read his opinion above. It is a very limited edition booklet, and will only ever be available directly from me. The price is £42 plus postage. I don't do the "trust me, it's good" marketing. I'll decide that for myself as the customer.
Frustrating marketing, but I'm interested in learning more.

Well, I'm looking forward to some reviews.
I think it is total garbage marketing to keep buyers in the dark like this. How do I know it is even something I would want to perform? I really hope very few people purchase this without more information about what the heck this is? kj |

Received my book today!
This is difficult for me to review because I want to respect the author and try to say as little as I can about the actual effect. As the name suggests, the effect has to do with an imaginary friend. Essentially, you speak of an imaginary friend you used to have. Recently, this imaginary friend has started contacting you again. You then prove to the spectator that he's been contacting you and prove that he can even describe things currently. But then you also prove that there's literally no way that he COULD be contacting you. It's very eery. Your imaginary friend then instructs your spectator on how to play a game. Your spectator plays along and in the end, the imaginary friend knows an incredible amount of information about the situation. The lasting "souvenir" is that the spectator can also re-affirm the fact that the whole thing they just witnessed was impossible. Some of you may know that I love the Jerx blog and find his presentations very interesting. (See my review of the Jerx Volume 1 here: https://youtu.be/qeC9q4X3dNM ) This is similar for sure but fundamentally different than what "Andy" from the Jerx does. One of the biggest differences is that Andy's whole philosophy is to create a presentation that is so unbelievable, people can't figure out another way it could be done (and don't WANT to.) Mark's presentation here almost seems too plausible. I know that's a strange thing to say. The magic itself seems impossible, but the story surrounding it seems possible. And that story kind of makes the performer sound like a freak. Not in a good way. So I'm not very fond of that aspect of it. But I guess with a little thought, that could be fixed. The "main" trick of this routine actually comes from a previous release of Mark's which I was not fond of. However in this routine, the presentation definitely does justice to the effect and makes it more effective. I really love the effect but honestly, I'll never do it. There's too much investment for me. It involves the performer spending a bit of money (and actually spending more money every month) in order to perform this effect. That's a problem for me because I wouldn't use it enough to make that expense worthwhile. You also have to have an assistant to help you out behind the scenes which is another investment which you have to be able to rely on. (Kindly, Mark actually provides 2 copies of the book. One for the performer and one for the assistant to help bride that person into doing it) But as I said, I love the effect. It will definitely have a lasting impact on the spectator and it's a nice justification for the effects within. If anyone is interested in buying this copy from me, send me a PM. I'll try to answer all the questions I can without giving too much away. Thanks, Madison |

Dammit, wish I'd had waited for your review but took the plunge also... I have yet to receive mine yet though being in the UK hopefully it'll arrive soon, but you got yours quicker than me and are in a diff country lol.
I've had mixed feelings with a bunch of Marks stuff, but on the whole have enjoyed them and so thought I'd check this out... if I had know about the whole assistant thing then I'd have def passed, and ongoing costs to be able to utilise it is another downer for me (it'd have to be completely amazing to warrant monthly payments for me personally) but guess I'll see if it can tempt me when I finally get my hands on it. Not holding out much hope now though. Cheers for the update. |
