Looks like a new release from Penguin. I am not familiar with Alain Nu's work, and there is no description on the web page...not sure if this is good. |

I bought it. He mentioned this on his FB page a little while ago. It's basically intended to be a coaching session on improving your mentalism, I believe.
Alain is one of the best performers I know. I don't often get a chance to hang with him, but when I do I don't hesitate to make the 2+ hour drive for an evening of talking shop. As for credentials - He's published several effects (One of which I used for my first stage appearance and am considering bringing back into my shows), two books for the general public, had his own TV show, and he works live performances at least weekly. I'll be happy to come back to this thread and give more information when I have time to watch this.

I liked Alain's Penguin Live lecture... Hopeful that this product is equally good if not better... He has a real enthusiam for his material that you can feel. I think that's an important lesson in and of itself...

Would like to know if there is an overlap with the material on his Penguin lecture - if so how much?

Easy ACAAN-Alain teaches his ultra simple method to make this ACAAN look ultra real. Do I know You. Real Time Prediction based on very basic get to know you questions. This will make you look like you known a complete stranger for No Threat Roulette. A very practical Russian Roulette style routine with no danger. Alain's method allows you to perform this almost anywhere in a moments notice. Serial Killa. Alain's personal routine for what might possibly be the most realistic serial bill divination ever. E SPELL. Alain's spelling routine using ESP cards. No table needed this can be done anywhere. Apparently 9. Spectator chooses the only ESP that matches your prediction that has been in full view the entire time. 5 to 9. Predict a freely chosen ESP card in the fairest way. |

Unfortunately, I can't really recommend this video except for beginning mentalists. There is some good content but I found most of the routines somewhat lackluster. Alain talks a lot on the video about connecting with the audience but frankly, I didn't see much of that in the demonstration performances. It's a shame because I really like Alain and found his Penguin Live lecture to be really good, but this just kind of felt flat and uninspired. For experienced mentalists there's little new here in terms of presentations or methods but it might be beneficial for someone just getting started.

I just finished my first watch, and liked the entire project. Standout for me, for obvious reasons, is the AEIOU segment. I love all the thinking and crossover of various elements and systems and their correspondence and relationships to the Zenner symbols. Alain went in a direction I would never have thought of, and I appreciate his opening my eyes to this.
Alain stated he was using simple methods and that the material include in this project was impromptu. He kept to his word. Although not a fan of card at any number, I enjoyed his approach and methodology. The methodology was utilized with his Zenner card material, and I really enjoyed this material and am looking at how I can adapt some of it into my own work. Just 10 ESP cards, or they can be made on the spot using business cards... The Do I know you routine will be overlooked by most because it is simple and people will say it is just a blah blah blah. But it is actually a pretty clever piece to have in your head as an any time any where piece to use when needed. The roulette routine was the only overlapping piece from the lecture. It is a nice and easy piece of theater that can be done in any setting, close up parlor, or on stage. The explanation and the demonstration were perfect. Serial Killa is the one piece I have to spend more time with. It is a multi faceted serial number revelation that is done with a borrowed bill and is almost entirely hands off, and will be remembered as completely hands off. The methods here are sneaky, not the obvious physical method, but the subsequent methods. I cannot speak for others but this was a good purchase for me. I learned a whole new way of looking at Zenner cards, learned a nice new technique, learned a hand full of ten card ESP pieces, and picked up a coupe routines I can do at any time. Tony Iacoviello |

There are other methods and routines available where you do not need to do this stype of pre-show work. The otehr three routiens I watched so far were just OK. I would do them if I was in a pinch and could not do anything else. I would not do them in for prepared gig. These routines could be done impromptu. These routines are good for beginners and for thsoe who need to do something when your pockets are empty and you need to do something in the spur of the moment. Michael

I appreciate Tony's review and can't really disagree with much of it... it's just that I perform primarily from stage and none of the material would really work for that purpose.
Oh... the Serial Killa routine... I found that one really confusing in both presentation and method. It wasn't even clear to me what was supposed to be happening. By reading out some of the numbers on the bill you can divine others? How does that make any sense? In general, there just seemed to be too much material on this teaching where the premise is "synchronicity" and Alain provided very little in terms of scripting the presentations outside of "this is strange", "...that's interesting...", "that's weird", etc. That was disappointing to me because if you're going to demonstrate simple effects, that's fine, but beef them up with some good scripting and presentation. I don't think it's the worst but I just expected more from Alain. |

Oh, I will also say that I actually like the "Do I Know You?" routine the best... it's got a good hook, although I would change the method slightly but overall the concept is good.

Having seen Alain's show, and having spent a few evenings chatting about mentalism and magic, I can see this from both sides. This video really is like sitting down with him and talking shop. That may not be for everyone but I find it endearing.
I do really like his approach with ESP cards and the amount of symbolism he's able to apply to the various cards. I think I got the most out of the ESP section in terms of presentation ideas. I also really liked Serial Killa and Do I Know You?. I didn't pay much attention to the card bits, other than understanding the basic methods, since I don't use cards in my shows. I know Do I Know You? uses an old method which I am familiar with, but I like Alain's subtle tweaks and approach. Serial Killa doesn't seem to make sense as he performs it, I know, but having seen him work a room I know it works. That's just how Alain is - he plays it straight, and because he plays it straight he can get away with some degree of an illogical approach because he'll tell you it's not logical, but it just works. I can see how a lot of "science" type mentalists wouldn't really be able to use his material as he presents it - but that's a good thing. Take the thoughts and use them to your own ends.

Well, I like Alain. Can't deny he is a successful and smart mentalist. I seem to agree most with Tony.
I actually liked the cross cut force ideas, as basic as they were, but they highlighted how even an experienced guy like Alain actually uses this force. I did enjoy the ESP explanations of all the variables for each card. I do have Doug Ds book and he explains these things as well but to hear them again inspired me to really go for the ESP cards more than I had. As far as the serial killa not much there for me. Way to much thinking and it frankly was confusing. Alain is a smart guy and a fast thinker. I'm not. I may be a half smart guy but my brain doesn't think that fast and clear. There are other serial bill divination I would tend toward. The ESP effects I enjoyed. His bag idea I had never seen before and was well worth the dvd purchase. I kind of knew what I was getting into before I made the purchase, as I've had other of Alain's items. But I felt I had to learn something and I did. J PS: I do wish there had been a PDF with this. Especially for the ESP effects. |

Yeah the bag idea is golden. Definitely using that.
