I like his view on humanity, and it's inherent goodness; as well as his perfectly rational supposition that the universe doesn't exist just for us.

He's also a heck of an artist.
If you need fear to enforce your beliefs, then your beliefs are worthless.

Is it perfectly rational to not "doubt for a second" that alien life exists?

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

Fair enough.

How about extremely reasonable supposition?

If you include simple life forms such as bacteria, why wouldn't it be?

I believe the universe is significantly large so as to support other life. That is a belief, a supposition and not supported by anything except my lack of understanding and unwillingness to make blanket statements of fact when all the facts are not in.

Oh, you know. All the things that can get people an involuntary vacation. Extraordinary claims without extraordinary evidence, belief without proof (some call it evidence), etc.

If we are the only planet with life then that's ALOT of wasted space.

Even considering what we do know of the universe, it seems as if it is a LOT of wasted space.

I can't imagine a better use of all that space.

“One of the reasons I don’t believe they have been here is that civilizations that are more advanced are more altruistic and friendly — like Earth, which is better than it used to be — so they would have landed and said, ‘We come in peace and we know from our studies you have cancer that kills people, we solved that problem 50 years ago, here’s the gadget we put on a person’s chest that will cure it, we will show you how to make it.'”

“Just like some day, say 1,000 years from now, when we can go to another star and see a planet, that’s what we would do because we will know how to cure cancer, cure birth defects, so we would teach them.”

I like the way he conflates advanced with altruistic and friendly. And then goes on to imagine cures for cancer and somehow curing birth defects... and that others would want the same technology for the same purposes.

On the art side... if it sells, good for him.

Ask any indigenous people how great it was to have a people discover them.

Invariably it did not work out well for the discovered. I would not be so eager to be discovered by a more advanced race.

You beat me to it, Danny and Jon. I kind of LOL'd when I read the curing cancer quote. More like we'd take over their planet, kick them off their planet, and then build an interplanetary wall to keep them out.

Consider how it go if a ship we send somewhere gets a radio message politely requesting they do not land and not to bring alien culture to their world ...
